'Pay up:' Marjorie Taylor Greene loses Supreme Court bid to overturn $100k in mask fines

MSNBC

"Tonight we are still waiting for the supreme court to rule on two pretty big cases. There's the effort to disqualify Donald Trump from appearing on the ballot in Colorado based on the 14th amendment and Trump's incitement of an insurrection in 2020. The court is also considering Trump's claim that he's immune from being prosecuted in the federal elections case brought by special counsel Jack Smith.

But while we watch and wait for action on those major cases, you get one satisfying ruling from the court today. A decisive loss for congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

A court rejected the Georgia Republican's case, trying to overturn the hefty fine she incurred for repeatedly refusing to wear a mask on the house floor during the pandemic.

That's right. Marjorie Taylor Greene took her Covid conspiracies all the way to the highest court in the land. Of course she did.

You may remember congresswoman Greene and some of her MAGA colleagues floated the rules over and over and over again.

Even while sheltering in place during the January 6th insurrection, by the way. It's thousands of people died of Covid every day across the country.

Marjorie Taylor Greene boasted about her total disregard for others health and safety.

'I refuse to wear a mask and i have to tell you something else. I'm not vaccinated. I will be standing strong, standing up for the people across this country that refused to get vaccinated.'

Eventually it caught up with her. Financially. As the hill notes, house rules fine lawmakers $500 for the first infraction with a mask mandate and 20 $500 for subsequent breaches. The second one really hurts. To be withdrawn from there really pay. Green racked up more than $100,000 in fines. That's a lot of times refusing to wear a mask. That's well over half of her annual salary.

He's not really a political deplorable but a legal deplorable.

This is his statement after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are considered children and destroying them could be considered a crime even if it is accidental.

Concurring with the majority opinion, Chief Justice Tom Parker wrote: "Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory."

I imagine he would also like to bring back stoning as a form of punishment.

Ironically this ruling from the court will mean that IVF treatment is far less readily available to Alabamans as clinics will close rather than risk prosecution when they destroy a non-viable fetus.

Good to see the sc**bag cameron slater is still being held accountable for his crimes. What a loser - he can't even pay his bills.

The stuff he does for that Reality Check "Radio" (quotes as it's nothing more than a misinformation podcast) must pay okay though, they (being VFF, who run it and fund it) managed to lure a guy over from Sean Plunket's Platform to work for them.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/jan-6-rioter-assaulted-police-calls-accountability-2020-election-lies-rcna134609

My heart bleeds. Not.

The problem is, the people who should be being held accountable (and I mean down the food chain from Trump - think about all the congressmen and senators who cried "election fraud!" when they realised he lost - yet they're still in government doing the exact same thing almost 4 years later) will not stand up and admit they lied as long as the orange buffoon keeps spewing his same election fraud bs. They will toe the line as long as he makes them do it, but the minute they don't, he'll turn on them and threaten them for daring to disagree with him. See: Mo Brooks, Mitch McConnell, Liz Cheney, etc etc etc.

Pretty sad (and pathetic to see), really.

New York magazine: The Constitutional Kamikaze: Tea-party veteran Mark Meckler and his “grassroots army” plot a right-wing reboot of the country.

On a recent spring morning outside the Pennsylvania State Capitol, a group of activists gathered to terminate the Constitution.

...The "Convention of States", COS , is a deep-pocketed right-wing movement that is quietly campaigning for states to call a constitutional convention, the first since 1787.
...
As outlandish as it may seem, the 20th century saw three major Article V movements, two of which reached 33 and 32 states. While it might sound lie a fringe idea, so too did the independent-state-legislature theory, which is now before the Supreme Court.
...
Meckler projects himself as the crusader of what he calls the “largest self-governing, grassroots army in American history.” But as he crisscrosses the nation to lobby lawmakers, he does so with a persona antithetical to his peers on Fox News: warm, calm, even ordinary. He often jokes that COS’s only “big fancy high-rise office” is the one above his garage and posts videos from the road while eating barbecue in Raleigh. “I’m all alone, but I’m thinking about you guys,” he says. “It’s almost like you’re with me.”

It’s quite the façade. While Meckler says COS is funded by grandmas sending $5 per month, his group is in fact bankrolled by tens of millions of dollars in dark money.
...
Just like his days as a leader of the tea party, Meckler is part of a vast web of billionaire-funded right-wing efforts pushing radical movements to consolidate power under the guise of populism
...

Surprising but true..

CommonCause: Right now, there are four major campaigns for an Article V Convention: the Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) campaign, the Convention of States (COS) campaign, the Wolf-PAC campaign, and the term limits campaign.

Each has different goals, but together, they have convinced 28 states to call for a convention. That means they have just six states to go.

How is Common Cause working to stop an Article V Convention?

There are some clear disadvantages of a written constitution and there you go. Everyone always wants to change it as a substitute for democracy and actual functioning government.

The NY Times - Sam Bankman-Fried Makes His Last Stand

27 Feb 2024

Since the disgraced cryptocurrency mogul was convicted of fraud last year, his supporters have maneuvered to secure a lenient sentence and change the public narrative about his case.

He has hired a new lawyer known for courtroom showmanship. A group of sympathetic law professors has pushed for a reappraisal of his actions. And his parents* have turned for help to former employees of FTX, the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange he founded. ...

On Tuesday, his lawyers are scheduled to file a legal memo in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, making the case that he doesn’t deserve to go to prison for the rest of his life.

The filing is a crucial step before Mr. Bankman-Fried’s sentencing on March 28, when the federal judge overseeing his case, Lewis A. Kaplan, will decide how long to imprison the onetime billionaire on charges that carry a maximum sentence of 110 years.

*  His parents are both Stanford University law professors.  Bankman-Fried has been housed at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center as he awaits sentencing.

The NY Times - McConnell to Step Down as Leader at the End of the Year

breaking

Senator Mitch McConnell, the longtime top Senate Republican, said on Wednesday that he would give up his spot as the party’s leader at the end of this year, acknowledging that his Reaganite national security views had put him out of step with a party now headed by former President Donald J. Trump.

Believe me, I know the politics within my party at this particular time,” Mr. McConnell, who turned 82 last week, said in a speech on the Senate floor announcing his intentions. “I have many faults. Misunderstanding politics is not one of them.”

This is probably good news ... but will he be replaced by somebody even worse?  😟

Apparently he hasn't spoken to Trump for a couple of years. Being anti Trump is his only redeeming characteristic.
