In other news, it's (supposedly) a good old fashioned Labour > Maori Party defection!

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/labour-cabinet-minister-meka-whaitiri-jumps-to-maori-party-in-shock-move/VNGU7FAZTRHCRAS6YDYEEJU3TQ/

Labour Cabinet minister Meka Whaitiri is expected to resign and stand as a candidate for the Māori Party in the upcoming election.

Te Ao Māori News has been told Whaitiri will make a formal announcement Wednesday at Waipatu Marae in Hastings.

A spokesperson for Acting Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni said: “We’re aware of the media speculation. We have nothing further to add at this point.”

I had my feelings on this years election result. Now, who knows, every week there are things that help or hinder both parties, I have zero clue how the election will go. What I do know is that it wont be a list of policies, it will be a psychological battle to get the vote. All about future dreams to win votes. Then when either party wins, back to the usual BAU

I see National are beside themselves with glee about Whaitiri possibly jumping ship, but it's not like they're perfect and faultless.

How does the old saying go? "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

Look, you are commenting about the end result, you need to comment on what the globe should have done, in hindsight. Even that is unrealistic when the future was unknown, but it adds value to the next pandemic. Which will be sooner than later, given that todays world is a mix of millions going to and from countries continually. This will happen again and regularly.

No, I don't. There were plenty of credible people commenting on the absolute mess that was the RBNZ response, at the time, including former senior RBNZ personnel. I have made that point often and repeatedly here.

I don't think it's a great argument that you can ignore the people pointing out flaws with your response, wait long enough and then dismiss any criticism as 'hindsight'; even when people were pointing it out at the time. Immunity from political scrutiny should not be a function of the basic passage of time.

Also no real discussion about it here but the changes to the Clean Car rebate scheme seem pretty sensible.

What should have been the response to the lockdown, and business support? If QE is out, do we provide financial support or not, and how to we pay for that? Note that QE was widespread globally, so at that time, the economic response was felt to be the way to go. What was the alternative?

I had a quick skim of the other thread, not that positive. Not green enough or not pro EV enough? Particularly the commentary on future RUC.

I agree with you, its sensible. As more EV options come available then most users have choices, prices are reducing, petrol prices are still high, a lesser need to provide incentives now

Given what was rumoured at one stage (industry scuttlebutt had the EV cap dropping to $75K which would have stuffed pretty much everyone except BYD, Tesla and MG) this is a much better deal.

But people still can't buy what manufacturers won't build or won't send here, and we're not a big enough market to twist arms. So other markets have more competition at key price points than we do.

Not much the government can do about that, so the changes to the fund are now more about sustaining it and optimising it, rather than a huge change in strategy for driving adoption. +

I'd say it's been a success, despite Chris Bishop's obsession with how many Teslas people bought.

Probably going to hear more about this resignation which isn't a a resignation today, I think.

I don't think this stuff can be OIA'd so it's better it be released from the Speaker's office and possibly also Grant Robertson, who has also said he was in touch with the Speaker over it.

The one where you give a press conference saying you've officially resigned in very specific way and want to change sides, only to apparently not have done that at all.

Hearing all sorts of opinions on procedure around this issue. And now there's going to be an update from the Speaker this afternoon:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2023/05/speaker-to-make-further-ruling-on-meka-whaitiri-newshub-understands.html

I'm inclined to trust Rurawhe's judgement on this one - he's proven to be a competent and impartial speaker so far.

And the resignation letter itself will not be released by the speaker without Whaitiri's permission. Therefore there's going to be a whiff around this whole shambles until the election. I think John Tamihere has made an absolute mess of this.

I wonder if Labour could not let her go? IE you're still a Labour MP until you resign? Like not sacking someone, but give them nothing to do?
