Surely Trump won't hold a grudge against New Zealand when dolling out 100% tariffs.

I'm sure Trump won't remember that long flight to New Zealand.
All to be told he was not a suitable person to operate what became the Sky City Casino.

Perhaps the US needs to learn...the 96% of the worlds population CAN say NO to the USA.

Wombat1:

Maybe if you backed up your wild claims with some real evidence, I might start taking you seriously.

You're just doing the same thing the Harris administration tried, and we just saw how that worked out. Scaring people, calling Trump names, and painting him as some trigger-happy racist bigot dictator isn’t the solution here. The Dems need to start taking americans concerns seriously and actually tackle what Americans care about: the economy, inflation, and illegal immigration! They just had 4 years in the office, made things worse, and there was no companing to fix anything.

Scaremongering will not get Trump out of office.

We've given you the evidence, numerous times. You keep ignoring it. It's called the Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership, and it explains in complete detail exactly how he can achieve every one of those things.

I'm getting out of this thread and the Trump thread.

I'm also removing the Washington Post and NY Times Politics RSS feeds from my reader.

@freitasm Sorry to see you go, I liked reading your posts in both threads.

Oh but apparently he "doesn't know" a single thing about it, despite it being mostly written by his former staff, and James (his VP) writing the foreword. Yep, he completely doesn't know anything about it at all 🙄

I watched coverage last night. Plenty of commentary from Dem sides and GOP sides.

My takes are: (not in any order)

The citizens issues were inflation, affordability, house prices, interest rates (mortgages) the border, and the costs of supporting Ukraine

Harris did support those issues but she was well into side issues. THE issues deserved votes, side issues dont, a complete fail

Harris had a short campaign while Trump had a longer measured one

Trump while being the idiot of all idiots, bankrupted a few times, impeached twice and convicted, and awaiting sentencing, is the master of sales and marketing. You bark louder you get heard. Nailed it

DEM factions, under 30's, female, coloured, urban, trended towards Trump. Both rubbish but he is less rubbish

Covid leaders have all been dumped, Trump included. But he was dumped for being an idiot, and ruling during the covid era. Democrats ruled during the post lockdown covid era, but US had issues, inflation, and so on, but that was a global issue. Over time that will ease as it has and is. But while inflation here or there is easing, the same higher prices still exist, they dont go down, so thats a fail on whoever presided over that even though it was and is global issue. So same as the rest.

Im glad he has a full mandate. If it was the usual malarkey over being POTUS but the House or Senate stop you, thats an excuse. Without checking, GOP will win both but one of them needs a 60% majority, probably wont happen, but its close to a full mandate. NZ has a much more favourable position, if you won you get a full mandate. Anything less is stupid.

Ukraine. GOP doesnt like the costs as do the citizens. So Trump will fix that in 24 hours (his words) That will be cutting back support and tell Zelensky to give Russia what it wants

Isael/Gaza. Israel is happy. Iran not so much, expect more conflict

Tariffs. They will go up, the globe may decide to trade amongst themselves rather than feed the monkey.

NZ, a rounding error, we will support the US as they are now number one on everything apparently, we will support China, oops thats a minor problem.

My gut feel is that most first world countries will subtly ease away from the US to get normality. If the US had a great people helping leader, that would be vastly different. Left, centre, right is not relevant.

You vote a party in, you accept it, simple as that. But in normal countries, you dont end up with a farce.

The people I admire most are those that do the right thing, even when it goes against their own self interest.

My actions will not make a difference, except to myself, I can look at myself in a mirror and KNOW I did something, I stood for something, something principled.

I will find other equally rewarding things to do instead.

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/11/06/middleeast/trump-middle-east-iran-israel-saudi-gulf-mime-intl/index.html

Ending the wars in Gaza and Lebanon and integrating Israel in the Middle East are likely to be at the top of the president-elect’s Middle East agenda, analysts said.

“Netanyahu will face a much tougher president than he is used to in the sense that I don’t think that Trump would tolerate the wars in the manner that they are happening,” said Mustafa Barghouti, leader of the Palestinian National Initiative, adding that for Palestinians, it won’t make a major difference “because both administrations were totally biased” toward Israel.

Trump doesn’t want those wars “on his desk as a burning issue” come January 20, when he is inaugurated, Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli diplomat, told CNN.

“He will say: wrap it up; I don’t need this,” Pinkas said, adding that Trump will likely ask the Israeli prime minister to “announce victory” and then strike a deal through mediators.

kingdragonfly: The Nuremberg Military Tribunal described the SA as "a group composed in large part of ruffians and bullies"

The SA attracted members initially because they organised street thugs to beat up the Communists, and later because it gave any random uneducated nobody in a dead-end job a chance to dress up in a smart uniform [*] and lord it over anyone more successful than them.

[*] The initial SA uniforms weren't that flash, WWI surplus for use in Africa, thus the brown shirts, but once Hugo Boss got in on it they improved markedly.

johno1234: Many left leaners call right of centre views “fascist” or “nazi”. Idiotic, hyperbole name calling is rife on both sides of the spectrum.

Well, when your candidate does a speech standing on top of the insignia of the American National Socialist Movement (and also a Waffen-SS insignia), what else would you say about them?

Axios had an interesting piece this morning on what drove Harris's loss: https://www.axios.com/2024/11/07/inflation-democrats-election-losses

In theory, high inflation may create winners and losers across the economy but shouldn't make everyone worse off on net. But in the real world, people see the prices of their things go up and hate it, even if their wages are rising at a similar clip.

Even in a recession, only a small share of the population finds themselves unemployed, whereas in an inflationary episode, everyone experiences the frustration of higher prices — even those who can afford them comfortably.

Summary: it's the economy (stupid).

networkn:

Plain and Simple, this was a thrashing, and tells the Democrats they didn't offer the people what they wanted.

I can't comprehend electing him (it makes me sick to my stomach), but elect him they did, by a sizeable margin, so it's the will of the American people. They clearly are prepared to pay the price for whatever it was they think he offers.

America has handed him an absolute mandate, knowing full well what he is both capable and incapable of being. With control of the house AND Senate, there can be no question of it.

We are a tiny tiny little fish. This has it's benefits, but means in this, we have no say, or sway.

The most immediate annoying thing for me is the infantile obsession with the press (and people in general who breathlessly consume it) to ensure every photograph shows him in the least flattering way, to provide snippets of sound without context and to comment on every single hair out of place or physical movement. It's exhausting.

In 2024, can we just knock this crap off, and challenge policy and use fact based logic to oppose political action? There will be no shortage of it to oppose it would seem.

I wanted a different result, I think they made a terrible mistake, but I am not American and so I am not wasting my energy on something I have no control over.

Thank you for being one of the few sane voices in this echo chamber.

I read about Republicans gloating that US stocks have risen.

Here's event that can temporarily increase GDP

Natural Disasters: Events like hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods can lead to significant reconstruction efforts.

Wars and Conflicts: Similar to natural disasters, wars can lead to increased government spending on military and reconstruction efforts.

Economic Crises: While crises like the 2008 financial crisis initially cause economic downturns, the subsequent government interventions and stimulus packages can lead to a temporary increase in GDP.

Pandemics: The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, led to increased government spending on healthcare and economic stimulus packages.

So far today DJT has seen profit taking  with -21% move, surprising.

Trump used to regularly berate the Federal Reserve for managing the money supply and not printing as much as he wanted to feed speculation before covid.

https://www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump

He has criticized the FED in the election campaign, suggesting its independence should end.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-06/trump-victory-raises-big-uncertainties-for-the-federal-reserve

Long term this has a cost.
In the TechBro world of speculation, Pump and Dump Coins, NFTs and such, its beautiful music.
Print money like creating new coins with catchy names.

Speculation is great until it isn't.
But he may not be around when reckoning comes.

Americans have long been used to easy credit, just get another card to pay off the previous one.
Maybe this is what they really really want.
