Wired: Elon Musk Is a National Security Risk

Shortly following reports of an apparent second assassination attempt against former US president and 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Elon Musk decided to speak up.

“And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala 🤔,” Musk, X’s owner, wrote in a now deleted post, in response to another person asking, “Why they want to kill Donald Trump?”

After deleting the post—which could be interpreted as a call to murder President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the US presidential election—Musk indicated that it was merely a joke that fell flat given the context. “Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on 𝕏,” he wrote, adding, “Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is plain text.”

The incident was the latest in a long line of increasingly incendiary political posts from Musk, whose substantial defense contracts with the US government may give him access to highly sensitive information even while he makes potential threats against the sitting commander in chief. And they point to the more pressing risk that Musk’s recent rhetoric has posed: the potential to inspire further political violence.

While Sunday night’s post is gone, it appears likely that Musk could receive some attention from federal law enforcement, if he hasn’t already.

TMZ: Ohio Wildlife Officials Give Context for Photo of Man Holding 2 Geese

A viral pic of a man lugging around 2 geese in Ohio is blowing up after Donald Trump’s bizarre pet-munching Haitian immigrant claims ... but we're told the photo’s just being twisted to fit the former prez's narrative, and what's actually going on is far less dramatic.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife tells TMZ the real deal behind the viral pic -- the guy was actually picking up 2 geese that were hit in a Columbus car accident. And by the way, that's 45 minutes from Springfield, where Trump's wild claims supposedly took place.

This is actually a pretty big deal in the US, the Secret Service is obligated to investigate all threats to the president's life, even if it was pretty obviously a joke.  And in Musk's case it wasn't obviously a joke.

I think we all know Musk isn't going to be visited by the Secret Service. He's rich.

I wouldn't be so sure.  He's essentially issued a public challenge that's been reported on worldwide, I think they'll have to take some sort of action.

I really wanted to put this one in the Smile thread but it's political, so:

A records flaw could block thousands in Arizona from voting in state and local races.

Applying automatic headline translation.... done.

Republicans upset that rules designed to disenfranchise Democrat voters are disenfranchising Republican voters instead.

""I never thought MY vote would be disenfranchised" sobs woman who voted for the Unfairly Disenfranchising Voters Party.

The following is not earth shattering; just shows Harris is a winner, and Trump is a loser.

Brittany Mahomes is famous in the US. She an attractive young woman, American sports female soccer team co-owner and former soccer player who played as a forward for Iceland..

She's also married to Patrick Mahomes, who is a star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

She has a significant following on social media.

The Independent: Donald Trump support after bestie Taylor Swift backed Kamala Harris

Brittany Mahomes is reportedly questioning her support of Donald Trump, following the former president’s attack on one of her close friends – Taylor Swift.

Trump’s recent attacks on Swift – who last week officially backed Kamala Harris for president – have reportedly shaken Mahomes “to her core.”

Since Swift’s endorsement of the Harris-Walz campaign, Trump has completely flipped in his opinion of the pop megastar, having previously described her as “beautiful.” “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

A source close to Mahomes – the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes – said that the attacks on Swift by Trump had “deeply bothered” her.

Trump's minions showing as much loyalty as Trump.

So brave 🙄

The Guardian: More than 100 ex-Republican officials call Trump ‘unfit to serve’ and endorse Harris

More than 100 Republican former national security and foreign policy officials on Wednesday endorsed Kamala Harris for president in a joint letter, calling Donald Trump “unfit to serve” another term in the White House.

Former officials from the presidential administrations of Republicans Ronald Reagan, George H W Bush, George W Bush and Donald Trump, as well as Democrats Bill Clinton and Barack Obama voiced their support for Harris, the Democratic nominee for president in this November’s election. They were joined by some former GOP members of Congress.

The letter said: “We believe that the president of the United States must be a principled, serious, and steady leader.”

It went on: “We expect to disagree with Kamala Harris on many domestic and foreign policy issues, but we believe that she possesses the essential qualities to serve as president and Donald Trump does not. We therefore support her election to be president.”

Among the signees were former defense secretaries William Cohen and Chuck Hagel, who served in the Clinton and Obama administrations, respectively. Others include William Webster, a former CIA and FBI director under the Reagan and first Bush administrations, as well as Michael Hayden, a former CIA and NSA director under the younger Bush and the Obama administrations.

“We firmly oppose the election of Donald Trump. As president, he promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies and undermined our allies, politicized the military and disparaged our veterans, prioritized his personal interest above American interests, and betrayed our values, democracy, and this country’s founding document,” the letter added.

The Bulwark had a (hilarious) take on James blaming the left for the (supposed) violence-inducing rhetoric that (apparently) caused the orange buffoon to get shot at:

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/youre-allowed-to-call-trump-a-threat

And again the question arises: Isn’t the other side’s rhetoric getting a little too extreme?

JD Vance sure thinks so. “Look, we can disagree with one another. We can debate one another,” Trump’s running mate fretted at a Georgia Faith & Freedom Coalition event yesterday. “But we cannot tell the American people that one candidate is a fascist and if he is elected it’s going to be the end of American democracy.”

Everybody okay out there? None of you ruptured your diaphragm laughing? No eye rolls so severe they got stuck up there? Great, just checking.

Obviously, no one objects to the idea that political chatter could be chiller. But Vance’s pivot to hand-wringing about extreme rhetoric is truly shameless coming from the current GOP ticket. Under Vance’s furrowed-brow rules of engagement, calling a political opponent a fascist threat to democracy is way over the line. But calling an opponent a communist threat to democracy, as Trump says daily of Kamala Harris? Less of an issue, apparently.

(a more sober assessment: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/violence-rhetoric-monumental-hypocrisy-trump-vance )

The Washington Post - the 5-Minute Fix

today

There are only seven states that we expect could swing for either Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris in November, and the candidates are pretty much tied in all of them. ...

Of those seven swing states, Pennsylvania is probably the one Harris most has to win in order to win the election. ...

For two presidential races in a row, Pennsylvania polls have underestimated Trump’s support in the state.  ...

The bottom line is that most polls show the race in Pennsylvania very, very close - with a slight edge to Harris.

What a weird electoral system - the fate of an entire country supposedly depends upon a few swing voters in just one of 50 states.   🙄

Ive been questioning why is the media not questioning Trumps mental health post debate like they did Biden, in fact it was a couple of media posts asking that question that had me thinking the same.

Of course YT is flooded with the owner of Fox anti Harris videos. MSNBC has questioned it. Of course George Conway is spending big asking the question. But its not quite the same reaction, which many think it should be, if not more of a concern.

So reading this from the Independant I thought the letter would say unfit mentally. But the bit about siding with US enemies, which is simply for his ego, kind of asks the same question, more subtly.

Sideface:

Indeed, in fact I do not remember a time the country asking itself is this sane to have such a system. Where the least tuned in, make the decision.

a few polls for PA +3 Harris have firmed its avg up. one not great Wisconsin has put it in question again. Ideally these would be both dark blue (+5). Bulwark was talking to an expert guest about this a couple of days ago Wisconsin and Penn. PA is a key state obviously.

But look how many sun states Harris has down to +4 or lower, or leads. Whilst unlikely for her team it is now just leaning red (+4.0 Trump), Florida carries 30EV.

again, many are not polling just because they registered, so, its very hard to Poll these swing states outside being +5 etc, it all comes down to Turn up to Vote, especially the youth votes.
