How do you know what I would do if I was censor (not that I would ever want to be)? In any case, I certainly wouldn't ban David Seymour, who has the most intelligence and best sense of humour of all party leaders. I don't like his politics but I don't consider him toxic. Where do you get that from? The fact that people read Jones doesn't prove anything. People read cereal boxes. Consensus means majority opinion. It doesn't mean mindless acceptance. My sniff test should apply wherever it makes sense, which this comment of yours certainly doesn't.

Great! I think our positions aren't really that far apart. Originally you stated "If it's legal and people want to read it then it should be in a library."

But you do agree there's a need for criteria, and you seem to agree with the criteria that they have in place. This leaves just one question - are the criteria strict enough? Because under the stated criteria one could argue that Alex Jones' book already has no place in a public library.

• customer and community demand and local interest

• continuing relevance to the wider Auckland community

• enhancing strengths and addressing gaps in the collection

• suitable library format

• the quality of the item, with reference to the average expected price

You could only argue that if you had an agenda.

His works would meet most if not all the criteria. The only one that is arguable is whether it is locally relevant.

It’s worth noting that being offensive isn’t the same as being of poor quality which refers to the physical quality relative to the price of the published book, not it’s content.

It’s also worth noting that the library expressly mentions that a book being offensive isn’t a criteria which warrants it not being in the collection.
