100% agree with her. Winston is worse than bad news. There needs to be more billboards, but better targeted against Winston. The public need to be reminded how bad he has been.

He was a disaster for this country in 2017 and will be again if he ever gets to sit on the government benches.

The number of people who think removing GST will give them a 15% saving is reason enough to doubt anyone who suggests this as a serious policy.

The GST on food thing is an easy sell, who's going to say its a bad idea potentially saving money at the grocery store? The average Joe Public is too naïve, gullible and/or plain stupid to actually think much of the savings will be passed on. Three groups and three groups only will benefit from this

  • The Supermarkets (who will raise prices after 1-2 news cycles, pinning the increase on supplier price rises, inflation or any other excuse they care to muster up
  • Accountants - the extra charges managing GST returns and end of year accounts to reconcile things properly
  • IT companies - the changes to IT systems will be vast and expensive

I hadn't read the bit about non indexing of tax rates, so I guess normal inflation will take care of any minute savings on fruit and veges that haven't already been absorbed by the above.

Stupid is as stupid does

I'm genuinely confused how the government can consider things like drastically increasing access to dental care and then decide to instead campaign on yanking the GST off fruit and vegetables for no actual benefit and against the advice of almost literally every tax professional for almost the same amount of money.

Cheaper and easier to administer would be to give everyone on a below average wage/benefit a $10 a week top up, ie much like the winter energy payment.

Oops,

Labours calculator was broken

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/labour-forced-to-fix-gst-policy-after-240m-hole-found/3SGFFXMX4ZD4LFDZX2RSF47JX4/

I get that these things happen (and National had better be damned sure of their numbers before throwing around costings), but this close to the election campaign, its a distraction which they really don't want.

Labour? I thought that was just a Green Party policy?

The Streisand effect is only going to help NZ First.

I believe it was investigated as part of a costing exercise.

And the experts agree, GST free fruit and veges is a dog of an idea

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/new-zealand-tax-experts-respond-to-gst-free-fruit-and-vegetables/EVZXXQYZSJH35BQCZZW2ADSSZE/

Even the economist for the council of trade unions and former advisor to Grant Robertson struggled to not absolutely lambast it and another said any economist who supports the idea doesn't deserve the title of economist (I had to laugh at that).

I also see more election lollies have been dished out with 4 weeks more paid parental leave for partners, to be run in conjunction with the main carer and an extra $51 per week and kiwisaver contributions too. Thats a policy right out of labours handbook and will have broad appeal

Please, National or Act, come out with some decent broad based policies too

Chris Luxon stated not long back that National is open to GST off veges and fruit. But the real story is despite all our woes, the election is about buying votes. Labour offers a silly offer, which on  paper sounds good. National then become open to it. They are both silly. I thought NZ had housing, inflation, health, education, infrastructure issues? Maybe not. They are both spending up on lollies.

Unfortunately, lollies wins votes, fixing issues doesn't (and perhaps because the issues have been around so long, that even the average person knows its not an easy fix).

Exactly. But its quite stark given that those sectors have been in the news steadily for a good period of time, yet now at the time when people can vote, they aren't.
