When I see money being spent with gay abandon on consultants,
In 2023 I parsed that at least twice trying to understand the meaning before recalling the expression. Maybe that's just me. An alternative might be "reckless abandon"

Really? Anything by Bomber is only useful for one thing. When he wrote for Craccum we used to joke that you needed to remove the staples before using it otherwise you couldnt sit down for a week. Literally nothing has changed.

Well, I found it amusing. But I acknowledge his humour may not appeal to all - when he used to be on Channel Z I couldn't stand him, but I find some of his stuff funny (like that article).

It's a low bar with Bomber but he must have put a whole 7.2 minutes effort into writing that. Astonishingly mediocre, even by his standards. Seriously, he couldn't have put some form of narrative around the debate?
BarTender:
Well it shouldn't be.
Everyone knows the international property sales numbers National have put forward are 🐎💩 and Nicola Willis keeps on doubling down and avoiding answering the question as she knows if she keeps on talking and avoiding answering the question the average voter will just accept the lie and move on.
A friend of mine posted this to me:
https://nickrockel.substack.com/p/letter-to-luxon
It's just so true, the constant negative narrative the National front bench has been parroting out is just nonsense, it's good for soundbites and appealing because it's simple. But a pack of lies nonetheless.
"Everyone" meaning your circle of friends and the people you surround yourself with? Echo chambers will do that.
Your friend's link fails the basic logical test: with an absolute majority, if any of this stuff mattered to Labour, they could already have done it. They've chosen not to. Ask yourself why.
You can flog yourself into the ground thinking that these parties actually care about you and are suddenly going to come good on all the stuff they said they would do but didn't, or you keep gambling that someone who actually can deliver something, anything, will come into power before they stuff it up so much that we need decades to fix.
At the end of the day, the tedious partisan red team good, blue team bad logic that's used to excuse the absolute failure of governance that we've had over the last three years while our institutions unravel and more and more Kiwis struggle with the basics like keeping their families fed and paying for things like power is more about reinforcing your own sense of tribalism than any legitimate interest you might have in solving these problems. It would at least be believable if people didn't look the other way on Labour's huge policy failures while they tried to make National out to be some sort of satanist overlords but being angry about someone proposing something you don't agree with is easier than asking hard questions of your own beliefs and whether the people you support actually care about them as much as you do.
At this rate I am going to vote for whomever's YouTube ads interrupt me the least.
Handle9: @GV27 do you believe that the projected National numbers around foreign buyers are at all realistic?
I believe it about as much as I believe PREFU, for whatever that is worth (which isn't much).
Put it this way: if this was a contest about financial and fiscal credibility, there's no clear winner. Just 5 million losers.

Its a wonder he still manages to put out any opinion pieces that get read. Lurching from one failed media outlet to another he must have a well paying dayjob that allows him to peddle such drivel.
If you consider the leaders debate got an average audience of 682k (5+), and the minor party leaders debate got a fraction of that at 77k (25-54) it wouldnt be surprising if Bomber was the only person watching the content on Re: and its doubtful there was anything worth putting a narrative around.

I did the math a few weeks ago. When you look at the proportion of homes sold above $5m (IIRC 0.4% of total volume and assuming a median price of $5m which is conservative) and the number sold between $2m and $5m (median price $3.5m). Take a 15% tax on the total value based on those volumes and median values to get the potential tax pool and then start to overlay assumptions on foreign home buyers then its possible but not probable.
If you assume that all foreign home buyers pay $2m with a 15% tax then its not possible (which seems to be the default assumption for those that dont understand medians in math).
As someone said, its as believable as the the PREFU.
