MikeB4: I hope the IDF capture the Hamas leadership and put them on trial for crimes against humanity.

I am conflicted with our position on this. I absolutely believe that Hamas are a terrorist organisation of the worse nature. However our government has a long history of backing the UN and acting on the UN resolutions. Our Ambassador to the UN should be calling on the General Assembly to make the declaration.

Whilst I agree with this sentiment, I also hope that a large swathe of the IDF and all of the current hardline Israeli government (especially Netanyahu) are treated to the same from some global power.

Atrocities haven't been one-sided in this part of the world and there's a reason this whole place needs a reset and a restart, with all of the extremists on both sides taken out of the equation (lawfully).

He is a very stable genius. He told us so therefore it must be true. A three day old cowpat has more intelligence than the orange fruitcake. Like you said, I just can't even.

@Handsomedan at some point the matter of crimes against humanity by Netanyahu will need to be addressed. Sadly he is taking Israel down a very bad path and was clearly his intentions when regaining the leadership. On the other side the Palestinian peoples need with the help of other sane nations need to rid themselves of the likes of Hamas if they are to gain their homeland they deserve.

Couldn't agree more on both points.

Why can't we have sane and rational people in power? Blows me away how easily these madmen take control.

I can't see any way in which any of those issues will be resolved. It would need something on an unimaginable scale to alter the status quo, maybe nuclear attacks by Iran or Israel or a pandemic with a very high mortality rate.

I gather Netanyahu was approaching the end of the rope before this.

Major protests against him and he had even got military reservists offside.
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-hit-by-day-disruption-disputed-judicial-bill-nears-key-vote-2023-07-18/

""
The drive by Netanyahu's nationalist-religious coalition to change the justice system and curb some Supreme Court power has sparked unprecedented protests, bruised the economy and stirred concern for Israel's democratic health among Western allies.

Some reservists have threatened not to heed call-up orders as part of the protest.
""

Hamas in its actions probably killed many young people who would have been opposing and voting Netanyahu down.
Now they can't.
There was an interview with an Israeli who deliberately sent her children to an integrated school to see that Muslims and Arabs are not to be feared.
She had to hear the rest of her family being slaughtered without quarter, mercy, or humanity.

@SJB I feel locking a population into a ghetto, laying siege and bombing that population is grounds for crimes against humanity. The Knesset needs to remove Netanyahu.

Maybe climate change will screw them all and make the land they are fighting over uninhabitable for humans.

Fortunately the people who believe climate change is a hoax are also very welcoming of brown refugees so I'm sure that will work out just fine.

It's off topic but a number of Orthodox Jews and evangelic Christians want a return of the lands of King David, for various religious reasons, such as bringing on the end times.

King David was not a nice guy. But these acts were not unusual for the times.

Chapters 17-19 (17-18-19) tells us that David killed 22,000 Syrians and that Abishai killed 18,000 Edomites. No one expresses shame at such slaughters.

20:3, we have David slaughtering captives after the cessation of hostilities.

II Samuel 12:31, "And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under the axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem."

Translation:

Put them under saws: cut them with saws while alive

Harrows of iron: bludgeon with heavy iron tools, often armed with sharp points on the lower side. The tools were used for the purposes of threshing the grain and breaking up the straw.

Pass thought the brick-kiln: burned them in a brick-kiln, again often while alive.

I'm going to try make this short. You have put Orthodox in that box and you're basically just wrong, and this is dangerous, and leads to all kinds of further misconceptions which also affect so called Ultra-Orthodox.

For example the large number of people who entered Al Asqa Mosque last week prior to the conflagration were not Orthodox. Some might then go on to assume those people were Ultra-Orthodox - they were absolutely not. Those who entered Al Asqa were a collection of extremists and extremist settler groups and were in fact acting against the religious directives of the chief orthodox rabbinate.

Yes, religious parties are in coalition with Netanyahu and there are a variety of religious parties. The majority in religious parties are not in coalition with Netanyahu for extremist reasons and are not extremists.

Honestly I'm not going to comment on anything relating to the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Temple Mount / Al Asqa. It's a flash point for at several religions.

Yesterday in the US, the PBS news hour commented on the situation, and wow did they regret it.

Even for us atheists, I know enough to never, ever, bring it up in conversation, unless you're inclined to bring any gathering to an unhappy end quickly.

Despite my own misgivings, I'll mention that Al Jazeera has some older Youtube videos, before the recent attack, which may provide a different perspective.

'nuff said.
