Kyanar:

What do you mean "careful tenant selection"? I agree with your sentiment about tenant management - especially with special needs tenants they need to be more active (or other social services invested) in management, but they're lessor of last resort. They don't get to "select" who gets a place, the only control they have is prioritisation.

"selection" means considering thing like disabilities, mental health, drug addiction, criminal convictions.

ie

You don't put a person in a wheel chair on a steep street

You don't put a person where they can get triggered, ie next to a gang house

You don't put an alcoholic next to a bottle store

You don't put a sex offender near a school

You don't put a white nationalist next to a mosque

Its not simply "here is a place" , people are complex hence the need for better management.

Maybe National/ACT/NZ First aren't quite as loved as they think they are? Those are some reasonable drops in the numbers there.

I am heartily sick to death of governments that blame previous governments for things they are too incompetent to fix. Does every government in this country spend its time in office thinking up ways to sabotage the next one? If you fight an election because you want to run things, and you win, then it is your job to run things. So quit bitching about all the problems the other government has left behind for you. If you can't deal with that, you shouldn't have run for office. You are the one in charge. You won the election. You have the responsibility. So grow up and do your job and quit whining about the one you beat.

ROFL. On Stuff:

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says Jacinda Ardern is leading important work, as special envoy on the Christchurch Call, but he's actively considering the future of this work.

Since she left Parliament, Ardern has worked as a special envoy assisting the Office of the Prime Minister on New Zealand's input to the Christchurch Call.

"We'll have more to say about that very, very shortly. Obviously, there's been a good series of conversations about how that model continues to evolve. It's important work, but watch this space," he said.

You can't bitch about the previous government if the ex-Prime Minister is your advisor, right?

Right, sorry, I didn't quite take that away from your wording. I agree in principle that a lot more needs to be done in terms of supporting people in the social housing situation (and outside it), but I think much of that would require a lot more collaboration with other agencies and to be honest I'd be surprised if the current legal frameworks even allowed all of it without some changes.

I've noticed that a lot with this government. Okay, fine, great, you didn't like the crowd before you, fair enough. But rather than reminding me of this every 40 seconds (just like the non-stop reminders that your leader used to run an airline), how about just getting on with "fixing" whatever you deem needs "fixing" instead of the constant reminders, or explain to me how you're going to make it so much better than the last lot who were apparently so useless? 🙄

Police Minister Mark Mitchell says children between 9 and 14 involved in recent spate of jewellery store robberies - NZ Herald

Children as young as 9 have been involved in a recent spate of aggravated jewellery store robberies, Police Minister Mark Mitchell says.

His comments come as police have recently launched “Operation Dusk”, dedicated to investigating recent offending at jewellery stores and maintaining an increased presence in and around shopping centres and malls.

Can we start blaming the Luxon government for not doing enough to control this kind of crime? Or are they still blaming the previous government?

As far as I can tell, we have entered Phase 2, "Blame the previous government even harder".

If there's one thing I can get across is that much of the hurt is actually a hangover from the previous government's approach to spending, which shows up in inflation and interest rates.

Dave, Dave, Dave ... inflation was already dropping before the election. To be fair, it will probably drop even faster now that you're engineering a deeper recession and widening unemployment figures by sacking a bunch of people who were probably filthy lefties who would never vote for you in a million years, but still.

Do you think they'll be unemployed for long?

It's not a small number of people looking for jobs. Put in the thousands.

Do you think it will be easy for everyone to find jobs?

According to the government, they were all completely useless oxygen thieves who brought nothing to the public service. With a CV like that I'm sure they'll be snapped up in no time, especially in the current economic climate.

You realise that is hyperbole from the government to excuse the cuts they are making.

Of course I do. Be that as it may, we are in a worsening recessionary economic situation and many of them will struggle to quickly find new jobs regardless of their qualifications and experience.

A couple of interesting National-etc stories I spotted today:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/04/chris-hipkins-reacts-to-act-leader-david-seymour-saying-labour-should-be-banished.html

True to form, the current government deflects their most recent poor polling to (somehow) blame it on the last government

and in breaking news - https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/04/jenna-lynch-analysis-second-poll-confirms-labour-could-take-back-power-newshub-understands.html

another poll indicates that National aren't doing too flash...

Also: https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/04/29/acts-arts-spokesman-once-watched-a-musical/ >> this is an absolute trainwreck. At first I thought it was Steve Braunias doing his Secret Diary thing he used to do for the Herald (now at Newsroom) but then I realised that no, this is actually serious. ACT's Arts spokesman knows next-to-nothing about the arts, yet somehow he gets the job?? Hilarious.

Wow. And don't forget "government shouldn't be funding arts. Rich people paying no tax will". What a contemptible character. He took twenty minutes to name Alan Duff (I mean, I came up with Lynley Dodd and Russell Kirkpatrick and Margeret Mahy in less than one minute, and can name a piece of fiction written by a New Zealand author this millennium), says he's a Musical connoisseur but has only ever seen a musical composed by a Puerto Rican (and that costs so much to get in to see that no average New Zealander even with tax cuts could afford) and says he's looking to "learn about the portfolio" by speaking to ... one actor. And another person. Pretty good odds if he tried to speak to an aspiring singer, or playwright, or writer, they'd slam the door in his face because creatives in NZ are starved for support. Australia isn't exactly perfect but the model is a lot more supportive, down to things like content quotas requiring broadcasters to invest in locally produced content (fun fact, ACCC guidelines permit New Zealand produced content to fulfill this requirement).

"Arts and culture are important. That's why we'd starve them". The ACT philosophy writ large.

Pretty sure they think 1984 is an instruction manual.
