As for the poor, I guess its a case of "Let them eat cake", far more important to let Brian Tamaki get his snout into the trough.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the argument that Wellington public servants should be considered sacred cows because it might have a negative impact on businesses in Wellington if they're subjected to the same reality the rest of the country has to deal with.

The reality is, things will suffer. Departments will try to make budget with deferred maintenance leaving bigger pot holes to appear later.
Things like passports will take longer, computer systems will not get upgraded, but will take longer and become more expensive to do so.
We have more people in prison for longer costing far more money than it would have to feed them and educate them.
More stuff will be contracted out, not because it is cheaper or better, but because there is no other option

Ultimately I believe it will open the government up to more "pressure" from businesses and for them to get their own way at the expenses of the people.

We will stupidly build more roads so the future us can look back, see the billions wasted and wonder why we did not invest in rail

National has become all about the quick buck.

Bishop announces housing related plan changes

The major change - councils will be required to have 30 years worth of development zoned ready to go at any one time if I understand it correctly. Previously they were required to plan 30 but only needed 3 ready to go.

In practice I expect this means a large amount of rural land will be zoned for residential. Bishop says there will be new regs to protect productive soils protecting Pukekohe soils for food production etc.

Uh-huh. The first major one they want to get underway - which IIRC is one of the developments pushing to get on the Fast Track Bill list - is out at Drury in former market garden country. 100% under this plan we're going to end up increasing the population at the same time we decrease our own food production.

The previous government's plan to require increased density would actually have gone some way to protecting the productive soil, rather than just some nebulous rule for which there will be no penalty for non-compliance.

I guess it depends on the reason that it's already "former" market garden land? There's land around Pukekohe/Drury/Karaka/Bombay that was once full of healthy vegetable crops that is now overgrown and unused. I'm sure the same is happening around the country. Perhaps the supermarkets are to blame? Would be great to see all that land being productive again.

Luxon has made it to the cool kids! Pushed to one side at the back, to be sure, but he can actually smell their cologne and his grin shone through the arms and legs and Biden told him he likes New Zealand as he passed by! You can't get much cooler than that! Except maybe the 90 minutes Jacinda Ardern spent with him!

Oh, no! Ted Cruz couldn't make it to Washington D.C for dinner with Luxon.

Never mind.

Winston Peters is going to Japan next week.

His boss just came back from there.

I wonder if he's going to bet and fly the 757.

Wait, so cigarettes now are going to be cheaper? I'm a non-smoker so doesn't impact me at all - but am I understanding correctly?

So much for "smokefree by 2025" 🙄

Not cigarettes, but a particular type that's heated, not burned.

Which happens to be sold by the established tobacco companies.

Again, there's no good health outcome for anyone who smokes. This means in the future, there will be more sick people out there, clogging the health system.

But this is a problem for future generations. For now, the tobacco companies profit.

You’ve made the common mistake of thinking a minister of health would work toward good health.

NZ First Minister Casey Costello orders 50% cut to excise tax on heated tobacco products | RNZ News

Has she done anything in Health that isn't just leniency for tobacco products?

Reti is at least a figurehead of sorts but I can't think of anything Costello has done, other than generate negative headlines.
