ezbee: Johnny Somali may be very interested in these developments, just has to clear a small issue in South Korea. :-)
He may have a lot of 'friends' on kick looking for new place to nomad to as well.

I've hyperlinked that for you because it took me more than a few minutes to recall that streaming guy from infamy. I'd be interested to know the situation with a content creator like him. Assuming he turned up in an ahem 'professional' capacity doing his usual ahem 'content' creation under the current settings I'm pretty sure he'd need a work permit same as an overseas film crew. That is, he's not a digital nomad in the sense he can do his job anywhere on earth. He's a content creator who documents harasses people in unique destinations to generate 'content' as I understand it.

Work permit required for him I think:

NZHerald: Only remote work that is based overseas will be allowed. Visitors whose employment requires them to be in New Zealand – such as sales representatives of overseas companies, performers and people coming to work for New Zealand employers – will still be required to obtain visas relevant to their own circumstances.

ezbee: Like tourists the example is always promoted as the rich free spending driving our economy, not the roadside pooper in the the dilapidated car. Its not considered that even the hard workers may be very constrained spending to build up their savings for further travels and future.

The vast bulk of the pooper problem is caused by companies that rent allegedly self-contained campervans - just a typical van with a portable toilet stowed in the back as luggage(!). Nobody in their right mind uses that toilet because they know they'll have to stow it straight back in the van. Extending the 'self-contained' category to these very standard vehicles should never have happened, result of lobbying. Sure, give them given a sticker that says they are authorized to park and sleep the night next to a public toilet, that's all. Provide them with a map. And levy to build some more public toilets...

ezbee: Hopefully we can frame this in a way that we get more of the positives.

It can be done. As it stands many NZ tourist popular towns have well known and severe rental accommodation problems for service workers and long term residents. Queenstown's problems are well known. There are many many more picturesque towns just like that around NZ.

NZHerald: “We didn’t create a new visa... we just went with our visitor visa and the visitor visa can be extended up to nine months, but what you see is many visitors only stay for three months because they are unable to work,” Stanford said. [..] Willis said the Government was willing to accept some teething issues in the interest of progress, echoing remarks from the Prime Minister’s State of the Nation. “As the Prime Minister noted last week, too often, when it comes to economic growth, New Zealand has slipped into a culture of saying ‘no’. We have to shift our minds to embrace it,” Willis said.

Imo much more planning and thinking ahead is required from the government instead of this silly central gaslighting and devil may care.

And I see Nat/ACT are back on the asset sales bandwagon.

As a landlord I 100% oppose the sale of any state houses, and in fact we should be building more of them.

As a tax payer I oppose the sale of our education system (polytechs), QV, TVNZ. "We the people" invested in this for the benefits of "We the people", not as a must return profit system.

I remember when we sold our banks, not only have the banks paid back to the Australians what it cost them, they are now making huge profits that head over to Australia and have zero benefit to NZ.

If NZ wants better return on its money

  • Put more $ into education, reduce class sizes, improve teacher education (STEM subjects)
  • Put more money into actual mental health, more feet on the ground
  • Put more money into drug/alcohol rehab
  • Put money into "education rehab" to improve the education of those who fell though the gaps
  • Put more money into welfare, why do we object to $100 more but demand to pay $120k a year to put people in prison, good opportunity for Drug/alcohol/education rehab too.
  • Put more money into school lunches, supply breakfast and an after school "snack" in some areas.
  • Supply food parcels to a LOT of families during school holidays when their kids aren't getting the school lunch.
  • Have "hospital buses" where teams of doctors etc etc go into remote communities regularly to free check-ups

"Right sizing" is where ALL NZers see benefits , even if they are not direct.

And they will want to add Health and ACC to this too. Just wait.

Health is a brilliant one for the rent seekers. Sell off the hospital buildings, wait a year, and then jack up the rent. What's the hospital going to do? Move to the empty hospital building down the street? So the rent just keeps going up and up and up because there is no limit to what the market can bear other than to sell of the service as well, and then it's a one way ticket to US Health Care.

Has there been any asset sale/privatisation that has been of any real benefit to NZ as a whole?

Other than a short term injection of funds ?

Electricity? Nope

Rail?

Banks?.

No and no.

So yesterday, Shane Jones and Winston Peters were telling MPs to go back where they came from, and that their opinions were invalid because they weren't born here. Regardless of what side of politics you swing to, this is unacceptable behaviour from anyone, let alone a Cabinet minister.

In the audio interview linked there, Jones claims it was OK to say it because Ricardo Menendez March broke the rules during COVID. Well Mr. Shane Hotel-Porno Jones, I don't think 'breaking the rules' is really the can of worms you want to go opening.

I remember that, I bet he would say "oh that was different" or play the victim card. How is this guy in government again?

Was it also Jones who bought expensive gruts? Or was that someone else.

I don't know if they're saving much money given a fairly high portion of the new! improved! lunches that Seymour was raving about are being discarded without being eaten anyway (one example here):

Massey Primary School had 440 meals delivered but about 200 were returned uneaten, he said.

Those who did not eat the meals said they did not like them, he said.

Not sure if any kids I know would be terribly excited about eating them either, given how yuk they look (in my opinion):

What was wrong with the old scheme? Ah that's right, we (apparently) needed tax cuts instead 🙄

I think of Tuku Morgan when you say that as I remember him doing this back in the 90's.

Peters has now seen the light and says the comments could have been expressed differently. 'Not at all' would be better. But hey, a politician who knows he was wrong when the Mexican ambassador weighs in on his remarks is definitely the kind we need more of. /s

Seymour  wants the whole School food scheme gone.

So you setup unappetizing food of doubtful value.
When a % are not eaten that becomes a reason to cancel the whole scheme.

Poor quality is part of the whole plan.

Seymour who would call himself a champion of the small struggling business.
In this case he sticks it to small local business part of community that setup to provide meals.

To the benefit of large concerns, for a bit of short term profit until it dies.
Having food that has to be shipped from one end of the country to the other.
With a high content of logistics costs, meaning even less goes into the actual food.

Then what happens if the old decrepit ferry breaks down.
