SaltyNZ: No, not all landlords. The ones building new houses are providing a valuable service. The other ones are just pushing house prices up by holding onto property to charge other people to use who probably would have preferred to own it themselves.

By all means don’t build a house if the maths doesn’t stack up. But don’t pretend that owning a house that someone else could buy to live in themselves is some charitable service to society. It’s not; you’re doing it to make money. Nothing wrong with wanting to make money - but you can’t have it both ways. You’re either a business or a charity. Why should anyone pat you on the back for being a business?

I'm a landlord. It's absolutely a business investment for me. Just like any business sometimes regulations change. Some are in my favour, some aren't, that's how it goes.

I don't need a medal and I couldn't care less whether someone is upset I'm making money. I also feel no guilt as I do my best to be a good landlord and I'm functioning within the rules society has established. There is a need for rental properties and I can make money and provide that service.

If the rules change I change my approach not cry about how everyone was mean to landlords or feel that as a special case I should be exempt from tax changes until the end of time. I've also had difficulties at times in my life and don't feel entitled to use them to defend my investments. It's an investment not a moral imperative.

Yep, hundred percent. But like any other business, government puts its thumb on the scale from time to time in order to achieve outcomes that are better for society. In this case they made a certain kind of investment (simply owning a house to rent) less attractive than other investments because they wanted to encourage investors to do something productive instead, and thereby grow the economy.

The new government is putting its thumb on the scale by tossing out regulations that will protect the economy in the long run in order to make a short term gain. I contend that’s dumb but then again I never sold laundry powder for a living.

As I said above it's just an investment and if the regulatory regime changes I can reassess my investment. The tax deductability issue makes cashflow more of an issue for those with lots of leverage but it doesn't really effect the price of housing much. There's still too much of a supply deficit for it to matter in a material way.

It's a nice issue to be seen to do something of course, which was the main reason it was passed.

I find it ironic that Michael Wood is complaining/claiming that TVNZ are not following proper procedure with respect to restructuring and redundancies.  Like he has ANY credibility in following procedures.

This guy is a hero.

‘Landlords’: Heckler interrupts Finance Minister Nicola Willis’ media conference - NZ Herald

Nicola Willis was answering journalists’ questions after a lunch at the Auckland Business Chamber when the man began interrupting her.

Willis was saying “one of the reasons we were elected was to ensure that, when we are investing, it’s going to the right places”.

The heckler called out: “The landlords.”

Somewhat thrown off, Willis continued “and for us, our priorities are ...”, and the man interjected with his quip again.

He called out “landlords” two more times before saying “entitled people getting more entitlements”.

Ah, but we heard over and over for months and months that "the other side" would be nothing but a "coalition of chaos". I wonder what happened here then? πŸ™‚

It shows that it doesnt matter which side of the house you're on, they're all incompetent.  One would expect better (like reading your documents or knowing what you're speaking or or debating) but its no surprise that politicians get no respect - they dont deserve it.

I don't recall the coalition in 2020 being called a chaos. Labour won in a landslide.

Whataboutism is not a valid argument.

A party wins they are happy, the others arent, quite simple. But this Coalition of Chaos is laughable and every week there is something silly and stupid and unprofessional to laugh about. Sadly. Typically you have many MP's who want to do good. This lot have no clue. The video post from earlier re Luxon being asked by Anna about the latest financial hole, the diversion and avoidance is legendary. The pity is he runs OUR country

It was a CofC after that fact when it was valuable in an election campaign. Perhaps it was as some MPs got into strife?? The Coalition of Chaos right now is real time, weekly and amateur.
