Actually a pretty good write-up: https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/350214575/it-incites-rage-police-verdict-luxon-interview

Also, the interview was pretty good too. When Luxon can't or doesn't want to answer something he just says one of his standard soundbytes every single time.

The the “Classic tabloid stuff from Stuff,” Christopher Luxon called it, caught on a hot mic shortly after the interview. Just goes to show how arrogant he is.

I don't understand why anyone likes him? He's frankly incompetent.

My thoughts are that people were unhappy with Labour and decided to change to the other side, never mind the fact that Luxon had no real political experience and used to run an airline.

Doing the latter doesn't translate into him becoming a good politician or even PM, however. I wonder if Luxon didn't have to have Winston on board (and, say, only Seymour) if he would be able to govern better?

Personally I think he'd just run wild. He already kinda is, but I think things would be much worse personally if they were to govern alone especially with him around. His interests are clearly for himself and his mates with no regard to the general New Zealander despite the soundbytes saying he is in it for New Zealand.

I don't like Luxon either but he was generous to Jacinda Ardern in his comments on the 15 March horror.

I think Seymour is the problem not Winston although it would be better without either.

For some reason both parties seem to be exercising more influence on policy than the Greens did with Labour. Probably because they seem more extreme.

ACT feel empowered having genuinely won their own seat 'Tāmaki', seeing their path to go past National.
Seymour is kinda inside the tent due to 'Epsom' they were assured in partnership with National.

Now its looking to get out from under that and show its time has come.
ACT is surely pushing National hard and thats ok for the hardline section in National itself.

Then you have all the Anti pressure groups that coalesced due to the pandemic.
Wanting revenge and to burn it all down to get revenge for pandemic.

NZF will also ride that as well as it is a gift for them, ACT is the real power an influence on National.

The Greens who refuse to negotiate with anyone but Labour? Yes, it's a mystery why they aren't a powerhouse.

I'd go so far to say that are probably a few people who voted National who don't really like him either.

But the bar for 'incompetent' has been set staggeringly high in recent times in NZ.

In 2020, things sure seemed to shake up. Since 2002, Labour's actually had a rough time getting those party votes, while National's been on top more often (2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2023).

Lots of folks switch between Labour and National depending on the candidate. That might explain why National snagged it in 2023 – people saw their candidate as the better choice, not just sticking to party loyalty.

It's not just us, though. Look at the US with Trump and Biden. Sometimes you gotta pick between two not-so-great options – it's the way politics goes these days.

I wouldn't really say that they "snagged it" last year - a lot of people didn't vote for Luxon or National, otherwise Winston and Seymour wouldn't have been required to form a coalition government, would they? Luxon would have either been able to do it all on his own or maybe with Act - but not requiring Winston in the mix.

However, if you were referring to the 2020 election, then yes that one I would describe as being "snagged" (by Labour, in that case). But 2023? Hardly.

Just like the Act party who refuse to negotiate with anyone but National, yes.

The Green Party has many elements that connect with all Kiwis, unlike ACT.

If they focus less on social justice they could be more successful. Working with Labour or National shouldn't be a problem but their refusal to negotiate with National tells me they are not for the environment first, and it therefore ends up hurting them.

We've already covered this multiple times though in this thread...

Greens going with National will never happen - just like how Act won't ever partner with Labour. The greens climate policies and National's "we don't give a shit about the environment, we'll pretend to however but really just want to make our mates money" don't work together nor does the clashes in welfare, roading, landlords etc etc.

You just need to glance over the donation list to see the richest people in NZ all donate towards National, Act and NZ First to boost them up because these people have interests in these governments getting in as the benefits outweigh the small donations to them: https://elections.nz/democracy-in-nz/political-parties-in-new-zealand/party-donations-and-loans-by-year/

Greens won't cater for the rich. They want to tax the rich. Hence why it just will never work and why these these rich who donate will also never be seen donating to Greens either.

I mean... it's a continuous trajectory in a lot of ways, I'll give you that.

We're not quite at spending an extra $70b a year with nothing to show for it yet, but they're doing their best.
