I had no idea when police started working they were on around $50k, I thought it would be a bit more than that.

The Green Party has many elements that connect with all Kiwis, unlike ACT.

If they focus less on social justice they could be more successful. Working with Labour or National shouldn't be a problem but their refusal to negotiate with National tells me they are not for the environment first, and it therefore ends up hurting them.

Focus less on Social Justice? LGBTQI+ rights, wage inequality, treatment of minorities, affordable housing, etc? How about nah - saying that doesn't exactly look great for you.

The Greens cannot focus less on social justice. It's in their constitution and is a part of the charter of the Global Greens which the Aotearoa Greens are a member of.

My brother in law who's in the armed offenders so super dangerous work (he loves it though) is on about $83k. He'd love if the starting salary is $90k.

My sister voted for National, not sure what my brother in law voted for but bet they're not too happy now and have been pretty verbal about this.

National are not for the environment at all. Regardless of what they say, every single policy they do puts the environment last if it is considered at all. Just last week, it was removed from transport policy, for example. Not to mention Shane "Goodbye Freddy" Jones. (And yes, obviously I am aware Jones is an NZF MP but he is also the cabinet minister in charge; Luxon gave him the job, therefore it is Luxon's policy).

These are not the actions of a government that gives a flying function about the environment. Only a short term sugar hit to the economy.

In addition to that they also have a large number of allowances and penalty allowances which in practical terms disappeared from many dangerous and semi-call industries in NZ long ago. I believe the current government proposes to cut some of those. I don't have a strong opinion not at all suggesting the government should do the same for police. $50K is approximately at starting salary for trad uni degree graduates in industry and that aspect and progression is probably comparable in some sense given the education level compliance with the law and due process and exercise of good judgement that the public expects from police.

Police don’t start working on $50k. They get paid that for 20 weeks while training. I believe their starting salary is $67k plus nearly $7k super and a few other bits and pieces.

Compared to other government jobs where you would typically pay for your own training it’s not a terrible government starting salary.

I mean... it's a continuous trajectory in a lot of ways, I'll give you that.

We're not quite at spending an extra $70b a year with nothing to show for it yet, but they're doing their best.

Sorry GV there is a vast difference between Covid and Ukraine and the ongoing effects of those. Illustrated by the challenges of many many and many other countries.

They are not doing their best. In any election those that favour the winning side are happy. And minimise any shortcomings. Those that favour the losing side are unhappy and bitch about the other side. BAU. This time around its laughable. Pure and simple. Ive been super busy lately, but I did read today of we cannot guarantee the tax cuts. Flagship policy is a yeah, nah???  And Peters say that whatever shortfall there is wont be affecting his gains/goals/dreams. In a normal world you can forgive Labour for being bulldozed by Covid and Ukraine. And you can forgive National by inheriting the fallout. But the latter, is denial.

You mentioned incompetent recently. We are living that daily

Social Justice. Two words, that are HUGE. Satisfy that and you have a wealth of eager workers wanting to be part of the production chain. Which helps them, the businesses they work for, the Government collecting Company Tax and Income Tax and GST. But for some reason, some people dont seem to work as a team

I kinda thought that too, sort of playing the victim getting caught out saying something wrong. I guess he's finding real life politics is quite different from the boardroom politics?

Also: https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/03/18/harder-line-on-unruly-kainga-ora-tenants-overdue-rents-govt/ >> kind of in two minds about this. I do agree that unruly tenants should be given the boot as soon as possible, but there should also be some sort of provision for their children (if they have any); maybe Oranga Tamariki could take them until the parents sort themselves out? I dunno.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he has not talked to his deputy prime minister, Winston Peters, about his comparisons to Nazism during Sunday's state of the nation speech.

During that speech, Peters equated the previous Government's co-governance policies to "Nazi Germany".

Luxon said he would be talking to Peters about that choice of language.

"From my point of view, that's not what I would say," Luxon said.

He now says he will talk to him: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/512056/christopher-luxon-to-speak-to-winston-peters-over-nazi-comments

re the tax cuts, I got the impression we would start receiving tax cuts 5 minutes after they were in office. Yet I'm still not seeing them.

Although now it seems like there may not be any at all? Shock horror! 😮

To be honest, I wish they'd keep the subsidised public transport instead - that one has actually saved me quite a bit of money.

Where are the comments from ministers that we may not get any tax cuts? I must have missed those.

There was never going to be a tax cut between the formation of parliament and the end of the regular financial year.

Didn't Willis stake her job on tax cuts going into the election?

Comparing Labour to Nazi Germany was at best just plain stupid but he was playing to his audience, just as he has always done. There was a meme on facebook at one stage comparing the methods of control through propoganda between the two, depending on your thoughts of the Labour / Ardern administration, it would be possible to connect the steps, but as with most things facebook, it was very one sided.

I've always thoughts the tax cuts were just a plain bad idea. They weren't necessary to win the election, a clear plan for service recovery (health and education in particular) would have a far more positive effect on the country rather than an extra $3-20 a week in the hand for some workers.

No idea why politicians make that kind of ridiculous promise. There is no universe in which Nicola Willis - or any other politician - is going to resign her job if she doesn't keep her promise. Everyone knows that. Like, literally never in the history of mankind has it ever happened.
