And I love the international spirit of hypocrisy we've got going here, as if the Five Eyes - us included - don't have our own teams of people trying to break into Chinese government networks. Who do they think they're fooling?

Obviously that's different - after all, we're the good guys.

It's just being practical.

CCP that controls China is no friend of democracy and civil rights, internationally as well as in their own territory, and others like nine dash line and certain autocracies around the world.

They are not operating in our interests, as a liberal democracy which is an anathema to CCP.
CCP is where civil rights lawyers go to jail for trying defend people, or conveniently die.
Tibet, Xinjiang Uyghur, Hong Kong, Secret Police stations around the world etc.

Taiwan one of the most liberal democracies in Asia.
Shaken off the old autocracy of KMT, only one to pass freedoms and marriage for LGBT in Asia.
Even facing up to its past 'White Terror' against native population as well.
CCP would turn it into another Xinjiang where the wrong word and you are gone. Rewind the clock.

Hong Kong, CCPs gift is giving out long prison terms for anything that can be said to be disloyalty to China's CCP.
New laws to help enable even worse, as well as travel bans if you are politically unreliable.
Parents now have to instruct their children to be careful what they say at school.
Parrot the propaganda, and hope they can get out before its too late.

Passage of major tax bill welcomed | Beehive.govt.nz

The bill, which passed its third reading today, restores interest deductibility for residential investment property, reduces the bright-line test for residential property to two years and removes depreciation deductions for commercial and industrial buildings that were reinstated by the previous government as part of the economic response to COVID-19.

“Making investment in residential property more attractive will put downward pressure on rents by providing renters more options to choose from."

What if instead of making investment in residential property more attractive, the government fostered investment in businesses, providing jobs to all those public servants that will soon be out of jobs?

And while doing that, instead of focusing on residential property for investment the government worked towards more New Zealanders, not less, having access to their own home?

I mean, just some crazy ideas, right?

However meanwhile we let multinational corporations out of their tax obligations

Multinational corporations are scrupulous about meeting their tax obligations. It’s funny when it’s property investors it’s envy but multinationals are fair game.

Multinational corporations are scrupulous about structuring their corporate affairs in a way that money flows to countries where they pay less tax or no tax at all.

FTFY.

You can do it today. It’ll cost you ten or twenty million but you can do it now.

Of course they do. It’s just like property investors have mortgage free residences and 100% finance on their investment properties.

Not scrupulous means something different to unscrupulous.

Let's hate the game not the players, because the system is set up for multinationals to make money above all else, no matter what or who they have to trample on to do so.

It's time to move on to a more sophisticated view of the world, while there is some of it left.

The point is everyone acts in their own best interests. It’s only fair when it’s the someone else paying.

Useless and ineffective (IMHO) Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee makes the cardinal sin of not running something past Winston Peters first:

Can't do worse than the politicians.

I cant blame them. To govern you need votes. To get votes you need to pacify the voters. Thats not compatible with what all of us do at home. Manage the income and the short term, medium term and long term needs. Politicians are forced into short term needs which often is short term bribes. We could have a 10 year term, thats a problem if it was a crap leader/party. Other countries who have dictators dont have these issues we have. They have OTHER issues. You could argue its the fault of us masses. We want short term gains. Whether that be tax cuts or incentives, or a new highway next door to us, its a highly biased environment. So, you look at the extreme options and democracy is probably in the middle. Not ideal but not extreme.

GV27: Even Seymour thought this was a bad call.

You know it's bad when that happens and he agrees.

When that happens and common in this govt, its best to side with whats media/public popular. What they really believe isnt relevant #transparencyandhonesty.

Case in point, Christopher gave a bouquet to Jacinda over the massacre here in ChCh. Had to. The key words are "had to"

I wonder...can you still have democracy if you put things like health, education, welfare outside of the political sphere by making them GDP/Population based ?

Nice idea. You would need a form of Constitution that separated funding of these sectors. No doubt some would say the highway near me is more important. But to have these sectors seen as necessities is a nice idea. Locked in metrics. As long as these "metrics" cannot be easily changed.

Nice idea. On first read, out there, but its not.

Five arrested with paint cans at library crossing after council repainting:

The irony of church members painting over a rainbow probably doesn't keep them awake at night.
