sir1963: Yeah, but how many Harley Davidson's does dead Jesus actually need ?

I imagine Tamaki's Harley is paid for out of his taxable personal income.

"Imagine" being the important word in that sentence ?

Looks like Luxon had a reasonably successful trip to Asia: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/on-the-inside/514758/prime-minister-christopher-luxon-meets-kpis-on-southeast-asia-mission

Three strikes is back. I see the government added the relatively new strangulation and suffocation offenses created during the Ardern government:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/04/national-reinstating-three-strikes-with-new-more-workable-regime.html

Ardern's laws will address a far higher number of proven dangerous individuals and thereby prevent more crimes than the three strikes ever will. I'm aware there is work underway to make stalking clearer in law as an offense. I'd like to think that is something Luxon and Seymour will be keen to support into legislation.

We remove school lunches which were a proven success because it was "wasteful"

BUT

We will now lock more people up for longer at a far greater cost because that is....more wasteful ?

Just waiting for Seymour to introduce "Private Prisons" next.

Students at Manurewa High are patiently waiting to have a chat with David Seymour:

TVNZ: He says he wants to cut up to half of the budget for free lunches in our schools and focus more on students that really need it. But how does he know who really, really needs it? Is he going to compare us?

Were they? I haven't really seen any significant evidence that it was significant success.

There's been no widespread measureable difference in student acheivement or attendance while there has been some anecdotal evidence suggests it's helped and there are surveyed "happiness" improvements. There's some evidence it's been a good investment but I'm not sure it's had the impact some think it has.

School lunch program definitely saves me having to spend extra couple of minutes when I make my lunch to take to work. Cost me about a couple of dollars for an extra sandwich but I’m glad school lunch program saves me the money and the time and effort I need to put into making a couple of sandwiches for my kids.

There is published research by Treasury, UoA and MoE showing that it has little/no change to attendance or educational outcomes.  Even the cited overseas research is weak at best.  The most recent MoE study (which sought to justify funding in the face of the poor evidence of funding) looked specifically at the lower decile schools that received it and it showed a 3 day pa improvement in attendence for only the lowest declie schools that received school lunches.  It also showed zero effect in terms 1 and 2  but the minor improvement in term 3 and 4.  https://assets.education.govt.nz/public/Documents/our-work/strategies-and-policies/Ka-Ora-Ka-Ako-attendance-18-03-24.pdf

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence in the news about how it reduces food poverty, improves wellbeing and that excess food goes to community groups in need of food.  While these are great outcomes it would be important to point out that these are not things that should be funded by the Education budget (there is little to no education impact from free school lunches) but should be funded by either MSD or the Minister for Child Povertys' budget.  Ironic that the previous Government worked hard on poverty reduction but the tool that has an effect is paid for by the Education Budget.  Right idea, poor execution - again.

Question is...why should the taxpayer be paying for your kids lunch so as to save you some effort?

I agree that there should be some kind of lunch program as some parents seem to be unable to deliver, but perhaps not for all.

Because having kids is a right. I’m entitled to have kids even if I can’t afford $2/sandwich and 2 minutes/sandwich. Lord or Govt always provide.

My old folk in the 50s received fresh milk and food at their school and even though times changed, I still think it’s fair tax payer should be happy to pay $2 towards lunch per kid.

But you are happy to pay $150k a year to keep people in prison for longer ?

Scandinavian countries have a different approach...treat people as humans, and it WORKS.
