Now that she has resigned that should be the end of it in the public arena. It has been indicated that mental health maybe a factor and therefore she should be left alone to deal with this in private. I wish her all the best.

Genuinely the right thing for her to do, not just for her personally but also taking ownership of it and engaging with the process will help her when this inevitably reaches the Law Society. ...

Agree it's the right thing.

The genuine right thing would have been for her to start addressing it when she first started doing it, which appears to date back to at least October (and not wait until she got caught).

..and not travel overseas for Christmas during the height of feeling so unwell.

Interesting comments from Shaw today:

OneNews: This afternoon, Shaw said Parliament was "obviously" a stressful place but Ghahraman had been "subject to pretty much continuous threats of sexual violence, physical violence, death threats since the day she was elected to parliament". "That has added a higher level of stress than is experienced by most of parliament. "That has meant, for example, that there have been police investigations into those threats almost the entire time she has been in parliament.

That would be horrible for anyone. From the sound of Shaw's comments it's an absolutely exceptional level.

Those vile and abusive comments that the higher profile females have to endure should be regularly published in mainstream media papers, or at least a decent selection of them, complete with user names. Hopefully some users get outed by family or friends.

Those despicables have abrogated any kind of permissable privacy.
I understand that the male counterparts are also subjected to vile comments but not to the depth and depravity that women are subjected to.

I tend to agree some regular reporting on this would be a good thing. It's unacceptable to the vast majority of people. Imo some dampening will occur with increased responsible reporting and public debate about this type of carry on.

Slippery slope but it's an interesting point. Publish too many details and some people will do it for notoriety. Police do publish details when it's required to progress an investigation. I can't recall it occuring for this type of conduct. Most of the time they probably call the perpetrator and tell them it's a crime: don't be silly, quit now, and don't do it again. I can recall only recall a couple of prosecutions.

Why not just withdraw from social media?

Each party could have a social media point of contact so an individual could still interact with them but you would have no direct contact online with an individual MP.

Why don't dairies just stop selling vapes & tobacco? They wouldn't get ram-raided nearly so often if they did.

One of the best things about our democracy is that we have such an open relationship with our elected representatives. In most cases they don't set themselves up as gods among men here. The solution to MPs being harassed to the point they have a mental breakdown cannot be that MPs stop engaging with the people they represent.

I think anything to do with Golriz and what she did can probably be put to bed.

There are probably still legitimate questions about what the Greens knew, when and at what stage something should have been said publicly.

Somewhat addressed here (paywalled):

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/media-insider-how-the-greens-pr-machine-completely-blew-up-over-golriz-ghahraman/T3L5IKQUNBH4ZAPDHKVXEAUVL4/

Probably also worth noting that Chloe is also a lightning rod for the unhinged and if there isn't sufficient support structures in place or leaders are unable/unwilling to front-foot stuff like this then there's an ongoing issue that won't go way even though Golriz has rightly stepped away.

Apologies, I'm a little wary of no-context links on message boards.

Indeed. I won't even look at something if I don't know what it is about.

Please quote the headline and some relevant portion of the article whenever possible. It improves discussion.

Taking the extreme case - if everyone added links without context or comment there would be no discussion at all just a series of links and you have no idea what anyone intends, and therefore nothing to respond to. Users have been warned by mods about this in the past and that is why it is not a common practice here.

Also, links to the original are preferred if still available so users can make an informed choice about visiting the link.

Rock on 😀
