SJB: Why not just withdraw from social media?

Credible and imminent threat letters, street incidents, all that stuff. James Shaw experiencing an out of the blue punch in the face from some conspiracy guy for example. We heard about that one because there was a prosecution and obvious physical damage in photos etc etc.

SaltyNZ:

Why don't dairies just stop selling vapes & tobacco? They wouldn't get ram-raided nearly so often if they did.

One of the best things about our democracy is that we have such an open relationship with our elected representatives. In most cases they don't set themselves up as gods among men here. The solution to MPs being harassed to the point they have a mental breakdown cannot be that MPs stop engaging with the people they represent.

That's an excellent idea.

They would still engage with all those who wanted a civilized conversation so hardly setting themselves up as gods. All the nut jobs would be filtered out before the MP became involved so the nutters etc would only be able to shout amongst themselves.

And if you have any other ideas about how to stop the harassment feel free to share.

Police statement on shoplifting investigation | New Zealand Police

"Police statement on shoplifting investigation"

Police can advise charges have been laid as part of an investigation into shoplifting reports that are subject to ongoing public interest.

Today, a 43-year-old woman has been summonsed to appear in the Auckland District Court on two charges of shoplifting.

These charges relate to incidents at a Ponsonby retailer that allegedly occurred on 21 and 23 December 2023.

The woman is expected to appear in the Auckland District Court on 1 February 2024.

Police are continuing to investigate, but given matters are before the Court we are limited in further comment.

ENDS.

Now people can leave Golriz alone to deal with this herself, with her support group/friends, and without the hate.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Sadly there are some people in the human race that thrive on other peoples misery so I don't see it going away anytime soon. I wonder how the video of her was leaked to the media yet, Scotties are still saying no comment?

There are many aspects to this and the alleged shop lifting is just one symptom manifesting from abuse and bullying which is sadly endemic in the culture of Aotearoa. Bullying is a serious matter especially online and not just Facebook, for example bullying has been present on this site since I first joined. Bullying and abuse often has very tragic outcomes. I don't believe the courtroom is the appropriate place for this particular matter to be dealt with, it is a matter for mental health professionals. As a society we need to take stock and look at our behaviour and attitudes and an attitude of retribution or she'll be right is not the answer.

or it could be neither abuse nor bullying and be an old fashioned case of theft or dishonesty. You are making assumptions for this politician but not necessarily for others who break the law. Society should not assume every case of wrong doing is caused by some form of abuse or bullying when we know nothing about the case.

The police have rightly charged her and I will leave my judgments at home until the case is heard, but I am pleased she has been charged so the facts will eventually come out.

In response Luxon has stepped up and set the tone at his party conference:

Stuff: Prime Minister Chris Luxon has promised a commitment to improving Parliament culture, after former Green MP Golriz Ghahraman cited stress and mental health as factors behind her recent fall from grace after she was caught shoplifting.

Women, and MPs of colour, also experienced a higher level of vitriol, he said. “Particularly what I've observed in terms of sme of the abuse that women particularly get, I think gendered abuse is a lot worse,” he said.

If something good comes from this I hope it's a lot more of this. Good on him.

Do you really think that?

I don't read every single conversation of course but in general I think this is one of the more civilised and safer corners of the internet.

Sure, there's heated debate at times and on occasion it gets personal and the mark is overstepped, but the mods do a pretty damn good job in keeping control.

(When someone disagrees with someone else and throws up an argument, even if it may be irrational, I don't consider that bullying.  Although I guess others may perceive it as such.)

Thanks for explaining "plethora".

It means a lot.

Could be construed that to accuse this site of bullying is bullying?

Why is it that in this era it is easier to accuse than just look away eg leave the forums or simply ignore the thread that upsets?

@Bluntj then you have misread what I said. There is a back story that I will not bring up here as this thread is not about me. I will add that your suggestion above enables bullies and perpetuates bullying. It should always have been time to call out and confront bullying and abuse when and where ever it occurs.

The problem is you are spraying your judgements all over this thread and you really need to just put a cork in it. This is not the place to discuss the individual's morals, psychological issues or motivations. You know nothing about any of it and you are just using it to get off on your own prejudices.

I hope this will stop here but I will add one thing for you to consider since your thinking on the matter obviously does not go very deep: This person is not impoverished or addicted to drugs or materially deprived in any way so her actions cannot be compared to those who are. By engaging in this behaviour she has thrown away a life of great value and privilege that most people cannot even aspire to. The fact that she knowingly took such a risk implies a great deal about the psychological factors involved. There is no way this case can or should be compared to everyday shoplifters and if you are too blinded by your eagerness to see the worst in it then that is just one more reason why you should refrain from commenting on it.

She pleaded guilty to all 4 charges. At least she gets to see this one out in NZ rather than Iran.
