So after a few comments from here I have nearly completed the two series for Dark on Netflix.

Its great and worthy of its 8.7 rating on IMDB!

It is in German so is subtitled and I know that will put a lot of people off.  Thats a shame as its well worth the (small) effort.  Its a show you have to absorb and think about, which I think is why I like it.

Thanks to those before me who recommended it!

Seeing the reference to The Bridge above (which is excellent) reminded me the Guardian yesterday published a 'top 100 TV series of the 21st century' (well, less the first <20% of the century!) - while you don't have to agree with the relative placings (I mean having The Wire beaten to first place by The Sopranos - what were they thinking?!), it's still a useful source of potential recommendations if stuck for something to view.

This follows a similar list they published last week of top 100 movies of the 21st century. Here are the links to both:

100 best TV shows of the 21st century

100 best films of the 21st century

Thanks for the links - before I look, I would rate top series ever as follows:

1. Breaking Bad

2. The Wire

3. The Sopranos

And there's not much between 2 & 3.

I've been watching Carnival Row on Amazon Prime Video.

It's a fantasy take on a Victorian-era "other world" where they're just discovering electricity and are still very reliant on steam/coal/horses etc.

The twist is that there are Faery Folk that have been persecuted in their own land and have migrated en-masse to the "London-esque" city of humans - which is somewhat uncomfortable and comes with the typical prejudices of that historical (if fictional) time.

There's a murder-spree ongoing and Orlando Bloom plays a detective that is investigating the murders.

It's high-budget, well acted and well-produced, gritty (and in typical cable-TV style, Lusty and Gory/Violent).

I'm enjoying it. I'm at the end of the series (one episode to go). I look forward to Season 2 if it ever comes.

8/10

Re-watching Altered Carbon on Netflix after first watching it a year ago.
I really enjoyed it the first time and it's as good a watch the second time round.

A year means I had forgotten a couple of things so got to go "Ah that's right they then do this - cool"

Also managed to pick up on a few things that are deliberate and clever with the the dialog - doubly so when who know how it is going to turn out for that character.

- If you haven't watched this series yet it has to be my pick for best hard Sci-Fi show recently - even better than than The Expanse (and I love the Expanse as well)

- If you have seen it - well worth a re-watch - Season two filming is underway and rumored for release Feb next year.

How was this list created? Where is Dexter or, the best series of all time, The Fall with Gillian Anderson. And Broadchurch.

Like any 'top x' list, it's arbitrary, reflecting the specific views of those who created it (the number, expertise and background of these people will affect, I guess, how much faith you'll put in the list). There'll always be programmes people think were placed too high or low, should or shouldn't be on there...

And, like any such list, it shouldn't be taken too seriously! That's why I suggested its value is in helping identify programmes that one may have otherwise missed...

Totally agree. If you see a list of top films created by say Mark Kermode the BBC reviewer I haven't even heard of half of them!

I just wondered who created this list.

All Netflix

Terrace House latest - great as usual, addictive

Top Boy - Binge Watched the first season, compelling and on point authentic England not US gangster TV shows.

The I-Land - Pretty good imo for the first season, hard to see how it will keep going which is what annoyed me about Badlands, loved that show yet they dumped it, same with Marco Polo

The 100, S5 - I thought leaving Earth in the show was a dumb move, what were they thinking, it will now become Star Trek which is hugely more awesome made by NF. I think its on its last legs.

Yeah, for me it's:

1. The Wire.

The TV reviewer on Nat Rad reviewed The Wire last week, doing so because it's now available on Neon:

My advice to anyone starting to watch the Wire is to not give up after the first few episodes. It can feel a bit slow to start with, but stick with. Once hooked, you won't let go.

Absolutely. You have to get into it, especially the Baltimore street slang. I just finished rewatching it and it's still amazing, other than maybe the final season.
