My advice to anyone starting to watch the Wire is to not give up after the first few episodes. It can feel a bit slow to start with, but stick with. Once hooked, you won't let go.

Absolutely. You have to get into it, especially the Baltimore street slang. I just finished rewatching it and it's still amazing, other than maybe the final season.

Agree. When we first started watching it we gave up because we couldn’t understand the Baltimore street kids’ slang and accent - was effectively a foreign language. Even replaying we couldn’t get it. Then one of our friends cleverly suggested turning the subtitles on - once we did that we were in.

Unbelievable on Netflix, crime drama miniseries based on a true story. All episodes came out at once so you can binge. Really good.

Just finished season 2 of Black Spot on Netflix. French crime thriller with Celtic mythology thrown in the mix. Overall it has a Gothic feel not dissimilar to Dark.

8/10.

The TV reviewer on Nat Rad reviewed The Wire last week, doing so because it's now available on Neon:

Thank you, Ive been trying to find a place to watch this show for years online. I think HBO was my only option as was too expensive at the time.

I wont be giving up. Supposedly Idris Elba is really good in it. Probably what launched him.

Just watched The Wire Ep1 n 2, I have to say after watching Top Boy its boring as bat poop. SO FAR. I presume it gets better? Because everyone raves about it. So far its grating to watch, like a bad novel. Surely things take a turn for the better.

Speaking of Top Boy Im not sure if they are related but the movies Intent and Intent 2 (which is a prequel) are both similar Jamaican/London based drug lord movies. I might watch them then give the Wire another go.

It gets better, promise, bear with. Actually, forget that, it doesn't get better ... ... ... ... it gets great, bear with.

Agree although to be fair it's not for everyone. You really have to make a commitment at the start - it's not something you watch an episode or two and get into. You have to fight through the language and the story moves very slow at the start. Everything comes together but it's not a show you can just switch off and be entertained from day one.

Agree, The Wire probably is an acquired taste. It’s not fast or flashy, but man is it rewarding.

I know of no other show that builds its story arcs so well not only across a season but also across the whole series. I also recall the character development is superb - I ended up thinking of them as actual, fully fleshed out people in their own right, and people you care about.

I feel I’m missing something in that I’ve never found that same brilliance in his other shows, but perhaps the same advice applies here - I just need to persevere.

We rewatched The Wire recently after last seeing it many years ago. Loved it, one of my favourite all time shows. Definitely worth pushing through.

My kids (9,7 and 5) are watching orignal Full House episodes from the 80's, (Netflix) pretty sure they have been right through Seasons 1-8 and are now cherry picking their favorite episodes

Some valuable life lessons to be learnt from Danny Tanner no doubt.

Emergence - TVNZ OnDemand - 8/10 This is a family-type science fiction/fantasy, mystery/thriller.

A small town sheriff investigates a case involving an approx 10yr child found near the site of a mysterious aeronautical accident.

This is, so far, a well written script. Think X-Files, The 4400, Stranger Things and Persons of Interest. Federal Agents impersonating other Federal Bureau's, paranormal things that go bump in the night and day.

Allison Tolman is reprising her Fargo roll of a small town Bull Dog motherly type sheriff. All the rolls are well acted with great cinematography.

There is enough suspenseful mystery to keep you watching.

Frayed - Australia comedy-drama series. If you enjoyed Rake (or Australian TV in general) then I think you'd enjoy this. I really enjoyed it.

I dont normally enjoy crime related TV shows, but I did binge watch Sons of Anarchy. So with Neon I was tossing up whether to bother with the prequel Mayans. To my surprise I like it a lot, I think the writer is brilliant. I love how these 2 related shows go into detail with the shows Characters. I think that is all the show is plot wise, a detailed account of peoples lives in their situation. Of course it has more scenario based plots. But the character aspect rules the show.

I took a dabble into George Clooneys WW2 Catch 22. Its a satire and its actually pretty good for US based WW2 plots. Semi Spoiler Alert ! (not that big a deal but I found it funny) Sgt Major Major, promoted to "Major" Major Major haha, I wont say why as that would be the spoiler. I will watch more of it when I get the time.

Binge watched The Handmaid's Tale seasons 1 and 2 (aka Trumps Wet Dream).

Overall I thought it was excellent although a little slow in places.

Elizabeth Moss as June was outstanding. When she puts on that special look of hate even plants wither.

Big Mouth, Season 3, Netflix, s03e5

They had a 1980's style music video about Florida, which was the best.

Here's a video someone captured on their phone, so not great quality, but at least its subtitled.

not safe for work (or anywhere)
