Hey guys.

I'm a bit of a night owl, I get a ton of energy at night and have heaps of ideas running through my head about things I want to do in life. Whether that be travel, set up a business, complete a certain game, whatever.

Anyway, whats something you want to do in life, but cant for whatever reason? Whether that be lack of money, lack of drive, injury, too lazy etc. Hopefully this will be a bit of a motivational thread and somebody will be able to fulfill their dreams, no matter how big or small :)

Maybe you want to travel the world, maybe you just want a new fence.

For me, its opening up my own restaurant. I'd love to do that, however I don't have the money, nor do I have the skills currently. Hopefully one day :)

Your turn...

Play musical instruments.

My head simply isn't wired in whatever way is required: even the recorder at school was a mass of confusion to me.

Draw like Da Vinci. I can hack out a reasonable scribble but to have the talent a true sketch artist has would be amazing. When you look at and dissect Da Vinci's pen and ink works in his notebooks, such as his self portrait, one half of your brain is saying - oh look, there's only about a dozen pen strokes, I should be able to do that - and your eye is saying "WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW amazing he drew a prefect likeness that looks like a photo with a pen in probably 5 minutes...!!"

I want to be able to have my wife's family come visit for the weekends, but alas South America is too far away to do that.

Travel twice a year overseas.

I want to go on cruises with my partner and swim in warm tropical waters.

Not have to leave her to go to work every day!

Speak a foreign language.  I did French and German at school, studied French online and did another course.  Went to France several times, and I can't get much further past than asking for a coffee.  The rest of family picked up easily, including my little nephews.  I have recently read that around 10% of the population struggle to learn a second language.

I'm educated to Masters degree level, so not stupid and make my living writing, so you would think I should be able to pick it.  No doubt if I lived in France I'd get it eventually, but I just don't seem to be able to remember the words and the order to put them in.  My dad, who has dementia, can still manage to speak French, although I see them cringe when he mangles the pronunciation.  I have French family, so plenty of opportunity to practice.

Win 1st division Lotto with no other winners to share it with.

Something more realistic, love to goto Europe for a holiday, never been and really want to visit Colditz Castle in Germany....... but money is the hold up.

So many things, but for some weird reason the first thing that popped into my head was the ability to do a standing somersault.  I remember as a kid marvelling at gymnasts who could contort their bodies and do amazing things.  The best I could ever manage was a forward-roll...

I've also always wanted to be able to properly play the electric guitar.  I've got no sense of rhythm or tone, so anything I've picked up is more by rote than by skill.  Every once in a while I pick up the guitar and have a strum with a foolish fantasy that overnight I have miraculously learned how to shred like Hendrix.  Sadly, alas.  Mind you, if I ever did I would probably start to question reality and suspect I was in Inception or The Matrix!

I'd love to see England win another World Cup, but very much doubt that will happen in my lifetime.

So, you're saying you HAVE won first division Lotto but had to share the prize with other winners? Pfft, nice!

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I would like to go into space. Walk on the moon and mars. See Jupiter from one of its moons. Experience interstellar travel and the world of another sun. Meet an alien.

Winning 1st division powerball and being able to retire from work and spend my time doing what I wanted i.e. volunteering for charities and spending time with family and enjoying life. Failing that I would love to be able to work for myself with a nice steady income.

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine, a life coach that I don't have to pay to get access to his service, on a similar topic. I am considering a new career direction (at age of 40) and asked for his opinions. He responded with a simple line: Why haven’t you done it if it’s your passion?

Like many of us out there, I am quite good at talking myself out of an idea that I feel compelled to do; no time, no money, uncertainty or unpredictability.

He sent me a playlist on TED and I found those talks quite inspiring to me. I am now building the new skills for my dream job after kids go to bed, and hope one day I can put them into good use.

Here is the TED playlist: Talks to watch when you don't know what to do with your life. If you don't have the time to go through all, the one by Larry Smith: Why you will fail to have a great career would be my recommendation.
