Not at all bad manners - it is entirely your choice as the consumer as to which taxi and which firm you use (except when forced upon you by certain exclusivity arrangements)

Agree. The the idea of getting a taxi for a 1km walk wouldn't even be in my mental list of options - are you people all rolling in spare cash?

Not at all bad manners - it is entirely your choice as the consumer as to which taxi and which firm you use (except when forced upon you by certain exclusivity arrangements)

Totally agree.

Here is Wellington it is Combined or nothing.

The Wellington Combined company has built a very solid reputation for taking you the shortest route and charging properly.

My partner recently had a problem with one of the drivers and called to complain. The company was very professional and thorough in dealing with the issue.

Find the Auckland equivalent and use that.

No, I'm not a taxi driver. Being Wellington and not owning a car you tend to use taxis more.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

She didn't by chance use one of our taxi vouchers did she? If so, that'd explain it - the vouchers we give patients get a preferential rate (tariff 2 vs tariff 1 for a regular journey). That's with Co-Op

Meh not that I should need to justify taking a Taxi, but it was cold, I was carrying quite a bit of stuff and I was underdressed, if it was the middle of summer I might have walked.

I get Kiwi Cabs every time, always cheaper than Wellington Combined and Green Cabs, not sure about some of the other Mickey Mouse outfits there are, but regardless, I'm not going to get the front taxi if I know for a fact that the one behind it is going to save me $2 on a 5Km trip.

I also never get the Taxi _to_ the airport, but to the service station just before it, saves $10 for the sake of a 2 minute walk. I realise this isn't entirely the Taxi company's fault.

When we were living in the Hutt we had to make sure we got the correct taxi company to go to the airport (in the days when any taxi company could use the airport) as one of the bigger firms charged an extra tariff whenever you passed the gorge! Made it quite a bit more expensive.

Combined is part of the Blue Bubble Taxis group - so here in Auckland that will be Auckland Co-Op Taxis, or Western Cabs. I will add that as with many taxi firms they have a small number of cowboys, but from what I've seen the other drivers are as vigilant or perhaps even more so than the customers at weeding them out. I even recently caught a Co-Op taxi where the driver was not only friendly and professional, but also provided barley sugars and bottled water with some reading material (Guardian Weekly, not that NZ Herald tabloid). Almost felt like catching Executive Taxis or Corporate Cabs or something.

Their rates are also on the low end of the scale as well. Green cabs (same co-op company) are slightly cheaper again, but both are in the vicinity of $1 per km cheaper than some of the more expensive smaller companies around.

I suppose this gets down to what you expect to pay, to be honest given such a short ride it is nuisance value to the driver but they are there to provide a service but at a cost.

If we want the convenience of being transported by a taxi thus not having to suffer walking or public transport we should expect to pay for it and its generally by choice we do it.

Maybe I'm too accepting but it seems entirely fair amount to pay

I am going to Christchurch for five days next week and it's turned out to be about the same cost to park at the airport for five days than to catch a cab there and back even though I live less than 3km away. Yes, I know there's the cost of driving my own car there and back, but then there's the benefit of not leaving my car parked on the street at home while I'm away.

After the Feb 22 Earthquake me and my family took a break and were going up to AKL this was about a week after the quake, roads bridges etc still out, we needed to get a taxi there, we booked at 12 for check in at 3.30, as we lived on the east side and knew it would take forever to get there. In the taxi ride the driver said she had been doing deals for people to get to airport for 90 bucks for the past week. We thought sweet we must qualify for that deal as why would you tell us if you didn't intend going to give it to us. Got in the Taxi at 12 and three and a half hours later we arrived at the airport just in time. She pushed a few buttons on the meter and said right that will be 270 dollars thanks "but ill give you $20 off as you seem like nice people'

I'd be calling up the taxi company and having a chat with them about that personally - it's quite a bit unfair for the driver to be giving you the idea that you'll be able to get there for literally a third of what you were charged.

Also, wouldn't it have been cheaper to charter an Air NZ flight across the city? Or a helicopter?

Yeah my partners dad sorted it out with the Taxi company as he paid, was pretty low. Expecialy with what had gone on.

it would have probably been cheeper to buy a coupole of donkeys of the net and use them. Ive been to AKL Return twice for cheeper then that one taxi fair

Well I did the same run exactly tonight after the Bourne Legacy and it cost $6.40 and made it $7.
