ajobbins: I moved my day to day banking from NBNZ to ASB about 18 months ago. It was a good move, especially for a geek as ASB are probably the most technologically advanced of the NZ banks.

I still use BNZ for my NZ credit card tho. Global Plus is the best

Yup, that is one other question. What will happen to my national bank thoroughbred card? I prefer money-back reward. I dont think ANZ has something similar.

With the move by ANZ to National's Systematics platform which goes live starting from next month, most ANZ customers are seeing changes to their products to align them with National offerings. Essentially both banks will have the same products, including a new money back card from ANZ that has been heavily promoted.

ajobbins: This will impact ANZ customers more than NBNZ customers. NBNZ customer will start seeing a new logo and colour scheme and that's about it.

ANZ customers lose some minor functionality, and gain some too as they move onto NBNZ platforms.

Possibly the biggest impact is to ANZ customers who have a customer number that is the same as a NBNZ customer number, in which case the ANZ customer gets given a new customer number.

ANZ doesn't really have a concept of customer numbers - their system is account centric.

Good to know that. I love money back reward. I prefer this much more than points system.

stevenz: Hopefully ANZ are holding onto National Banks bank number (06) for existing accounts as changing things around, whilst not a huge problem for me (but still irritating), could be a major for some.

It may be a good excuse to move to a bank that is more NZ-centric though.

Pretty sure they will be kept. Some banks seem to share prefixes too, I think both rabo bank and westpac both use the same prefix.

i think it's not so much that Rabo and Westpac use the same prefix, it's that Rabo does not have its own clearing arrangement and it actually banks with Westpac.

timmmay: and customers won't really be affected.

I think I disagree on that for people in small towns. Already when I go into the bank there are lines where you can wait 10 minutes. If they combine the branches so there is just one servicing both ANZ and NB customers, unless they double the size of the bank and increase the number of tellers, I can see the waiting times being higher.

They have stated that no front line staff will be losing their jobs as a result of this merger so I would imagine that any branches they do close will have their staff moved into the other to double its size.

Although no staff may be put off you can bet your boot that in, say, five years frontline staff numbers will be much lower because ANZ will downsize by attrition. As people leave they will not be replaced.

I would visit a branch typically around once per year.

Rebrand. The ANZ customers are coming onto the NBNZ systems so at some point it will be rebranded to ANZ

I think NBNZ customers will get GoMoney, it's a far superior app and is supported by ANZ in Australia.

Would depend how compatible the ANZ systems in AU are with the NBNZ back office that ANZ are sticking with in NZ

I just can't imagine ANZ downgrading their customers from GoMoney, which they heavily promoted, to the NBNZ app which is outdated and doesn't have all of GoMoney's features. Maybe they're building a new version of the NBNZ app that is more like GoMoney, but the "ANZ customers are going onto NBNZ systems" is probably just a blanket statement that applies to the core system, the mobile apps are custom built and use an interface so GoMoney may be kept and updated to work with the NBNZ system.

ANZ have been downsizing by attrition for a couple of years now, I don't see it as a bad thing. They need to be able to remain competitive. Especially now as their rivals attack the customers who are sour over the merger.

The customer number debacle (it is a debacle) has mostly been resolved now and as far as I can tell, with the switch to the NBNZ computing structure they will be aligning their products. From what I can see they are taking the best from both brands and upgrading their entire line.

Anyone thinking of refinancing a mortgage should wait till the bidding war that will come shortly =D

I have heard that BNZ will be competing here very heavily.

TSB are running quite a cheeky advertising campaign at the moment about the National bank brand going. If people do want to support NZ and retain profits in NZ they may want to consider the TSB as an option. I find them good but their online baking is pretty poor. But apparently they do have a very good iphone app now(but not much good if you don't have an iphone).
Although it is good to have you money in multiple banks to spread the risk
