Well as a ANZ customer, I'm not that happy.
A better computer system from NB ??? I don't think so.
Up until now, if I had a Few $$$ ($50,$100) left each week I could put it on my mortgage.
Not now, according to the ANZ guy who rang me last last Friday.
Now I need a minimum of $1000 before I can pay any extra on my mortgage,
because the new system ANZ are going to use (NB system) can't handle it.
So i now have to get another account to put that money in until I have a $1000 I can transfer onto my mortgage
(Guess that acc will come with fee's etc as well).

That sounds like an excuse (from them I mean). I've never seen a computer system that can't handle particular numbers unless it was a Pentium Pro. And even if there was an issue, I can't imagine it being hard to solve - sounds like they're just trying to stop you making small payments because it's not as profitable for them.

Change to Kiwibank and have a portion of your mortgage on offset. That way any $$ in up to 7 accounts can be put towards offsetting the interest on your loan. We changed from Westpac to Kiwibank in March and it was pretty smooth. Didn't cost us a cent either. Although if you have some of your mortgage fixed then it could cost some $$ to break it.

Or, you know, they're running the largest IT project ever conducted in New Zealand and making small changes like this will make it exponentially more difficult to complete accurately. Or something.

I am guessing there will be some slight interruption for its customers, but what it comes down to is if you are not happy with your current bank then switch. There are multiple banks these days so plenty of choice.

I don't expect much difference one way or another.

Exactly same as me!

I got my email from the National Bank telling me of the switch, so i replied: "BUGGER! I have already left the ANZ Bank once, please do not make me do it again".

I received a call the very next day from "them" all concerned and telling me how I'll hardly notice a difference. She said about the only difference I'll notice is the green changing to blue in internet banking, so I complained that I like green!

I Like green too! I'll be switching over to ASB, even though it's yellow. But it's the sister bank of my Australian CommBank account. So that'll make it easier to send funds between the banks.

Bye National, you've been great, but I just can't switch to ANZ.

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Working for Kiwibank we are circling just like to other banks looking for the unhappy NBNZ customers.. Going from the best customer satisfaction bank NBNZ to the worst ANZ would not make me happy.

An established brand like NBNZ disappearing after a very very long time is not a regular occurrence in NZ so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Some direct add campaigns are out already.

I don't bank with either, but if you've been a customer of NBNZ's for the past 10 years (ie since ANZ bought it) apart from some branding changes then there shouldn't be much difference.

If however, after the removal of the branding, an NBNZ customer ends up paying more fees, or has less service that they do at this point, then it's fair call for the other banks to circle.

Same can be said for the ANZ customer moving on to the NBNZ system. Their changes are a bit more fundamental - but as I just said, if they have a loss of functionality, and end up paying more in fees them vote with your wallet.

But until it happens it's mostly just speculation.

I banked with Trustbank when they were assimilated by Westpac. My wife worked for Postbank when ANZ absorbed them. It happens, there's churn, then things settle down again to the new status quo.

Well that's a first

Around 5 o'clock on Saturday I evening I recieved a call from "Justin" at the National Bank

Apparently he was responding to an "on No - dont do this to us" email I sent to the bank about their recent decision.

Nice bloke, but silly enough to waste his Saturday trying to persuade me that I should wait it out and stay with the new National. He spouted forth along pretty much the same lines as their advertising in that nothing is changing really.

I think he may have got the message that
A: I hate phone marketing
B: That I place a negative value on the ANZ brand
C: Becoming an ANZ customer is a complete anathema to me

But he wasnt really interested in listening to a customer point of view - just in regurgitating the offical line

Eventually I gave up wasting my breath, hung up and went and poured myself a beer

When ANZ took over NBNZ back in 2003 (or whenever it was) I always thought it was like the Ugly Sister taking over Cinderella - and I'm sure the NBNZ staff felt that way too. Now the chickens are coming home to roost, if you don't mind mixed metaphors.

Actually, it isn't easier. I bank with ASB in NZ and CBA in AU. If you want to send money between the two it's a SWIFT payment like every other bank. It's no faster and frankly the rates are terrible.

I get a MUCH better rate from a third party company. (Last time I transfered a few thousand, the difference was over $100 between using a 3rd party or using the banks direct)
