They were very good actually, i returned and told them about the double charge and they took me at my word (i was armed with the asb banking app just in case they wanted proof :) ).

michaelmurfy: Seems very weird, never had any problems with Paywave and never been double-charged. The store I work in has Paywave terminals + it just does the standard "Accepted" or "Declined" as if they inserted the card, on the eftpos printout shows "CONTACTLESS" so don't understand how they could have mucked this one up.


The exact order of events...

-Operator scans goods

-wave card in front of terminal --- beep.

-operator says the card crashed her terminal as it went blank-- she doesn't print a receipt

-operator rescans goods.

- I use Paywave again, this time i'm watching closely, 'accepted' flashes very quickly on the terminal. 

-operator says her terminal crashed again

-manager called and says this is how it works and wasn't sure if both payments were processed - tells me to return if double charged. This time, they print the receipt though. 

The terminal wasn't crashing- Because her screens went blank at the near-exact time i used my card she thought it crashed.  The transaction was so fast it did seem instant.

Actually, computers only do what they have been programmed to. Every problem you run into is the result of a PEBKAC at some point.

I was starting to think its a problem with my cards, I've tried this at numerous Countdowns and service stations, all of which have told me to swipe/insert card. Its really annoying because I'd love to be able to just tap and leave without waiting forever for it to go through when using the chip method.

I only think I've had it go through once on any of my cards (ASB Mastercard, Visa Debit and an Air NZ Onesmart (whatever its called)). That was at Michael Hill Jewellers in Sylvia Park, Auckland using ASB MasterCard. Worked so incredibly quick, very impressive.

Boyfriends ASB Mastercard works at Countdown though, tried my one at the same terminal he did later that week and mine didnt work at all. I want to order a new one but I dont know If its worth it because I've had this card replaced like 3 times now, usually to the chip failing and the card being nearly un-usable.

Same with my card. Ordered new one but same problem..not sure what next now...

Another here with the same issue. Sometimes it just fails and gets me to swipe, at other time flat out declines and says to contact issuer but then will work with another go.

NFC is poo from a user perspective based on my experiences. It is also so slow in most cases I have used it in (Countdown etc), Bunnings was lightning quick though.

The only real commone denominator I can see is that they are all Visa paywave cards issued by ASB, the issue does not seem to happen with the ASB Mastercard pay pass cards as well.

I would probably contact the bank and swap to the mastercard if its an option.

Trying hard to resist wearing my nerd pedant hat, and failing.

Unless you count stray radioactive particles as being a programmer, then no, there are situations in which a bit getting flipped by an external radioactive particle can cause an incorrect operation.  Certainly this is more a problem in the darkness of space, and in medical equipment, but there are "normal people" implications too...


A 2011 'Black Hat' paper [1] discusses the real-life security implications of such bit-flips in the internet's DNS system. The paper found up to 3,434 incorrect requests a day due to bit-flip changes for various common domains. Went to countdown tonight and my mastercard paypass failed and required me to sign digitally.. First time ever this happen to me

Just got back from Countdown now.... My ASB MasterCard declined (refer issuer) 3 times using paypass, so put the chip in and it worked! So nothing wrong with the card. Going to call ASB tomorrow to find out why.

This has been an interesting thread.
Obviously from a card novice there are 2 sorts of card to be cognisant of.
A Paypass versus a Paywave card.

I have a mixture of ASB Mastercard Paypass and AirNZ Debit (Onesmart) Paypass.
Both of these cards have chips in them. They dont have the Paywave logo on them.
I used the Onesmart card in Aus recently with Aussie money wallet and it worked pretty well. Excepting the chip must be iffy as often it has a read fail and I have to swipe the magnetic strip then reset chip in to work properly.

I spoke too soon re BP. After 2 "Trans. failed" attempting to use NFC with my ASB VISA this morning, inserting the card worked fine.
