bbygtr: I have been hit with the same thing this morning. I am Westpac and my eftpos card has been cut off due to it being used in Great Britain for fradulent use. My dad who is with ASB also got his card cut off this morning and his was used in Canada. Depending how long the "capture" period is I can think of only a few places we have used our cards together. The last place was the Crowne Plaza Restaurant in Auckland CBD. Both My card and his was used to split a bill. Interesting.

Very interesting I'd say. Did you let the card fraud guys know?

Geektastic: I would not have though a domestic NZ Eftpos card would work (except perhaps in an ATM) in the UK.

Surely you need a Visa Debit for international use?

A regular EFTPOS card will work anywhere in the world on a machine that has a Maestro/Cirrus logo.

Yeah i have called my bank to advise but they weren't really interested. I thought about walking down to the crown and seeing what camera's are about

Someone want to be brave and goto the media and get them investigating?

A friend in AKL just said ASB contacted her as the card was attempted to be cleaned out in the UK with an apparen cloned card.

So obviously you are all Auckland based? Need to acertain the common location too. And the only ones in this case are supermarkets and the warehouse.

If you guys all did a supermarket stop this may get interesting...

The banks have all the information they need to narrow down and even pinpoint locations, I don't see what the media can do except spook the skimmers if the terminals are still in place (they're probably not). The skimming could have happened months ago.

I don't mean to investiage the cause, but to at least incourage a representative to make a statement or confirm it has happened/happening and at least get them to publicly acknowledge it.

You'll read here 2 people have said their bank showed no interest about the issue. Making an announcement along the lines of 'We are aware of an issue - if your card is not working to be ready to call us" as there appears to be a widespread issue would be nice. Not a lot of difference here to all the geeks gere getting up in arms when there is an outage with telecom and no update on their webpage.. Except here people are going to be stranded paying for things IE gas when the card is denied.

It must be so easy for the banks to cross reference the transactions between each affected individual. Surely it must get to a point where all the affected people have used the same machines or visited the same shops in each location. It's interesting in my experience because both Myself and my father have been affected and we are with different banks and live in different locations. ie We don't use the same ATM machines and don't generally shop in the same area's. The family met up recently and had a dinner in AKL city which was the only time both cards were used at the same place "Crowne Plaza Restaurant". I seriously wonder if the "skimming part" has been going on for months and it just so happened that we ended up going to a different affected ATM over that time and the skimmed accounts were all collected and then abused on the same day.

Oh, entirely possible. Going by todays news article. And there are a few others from November too dating back to offences made during the middle of last year around the auckland area

It's because I go to the food court of the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Elliot St every now and then, just want to know more so I can take more care.

By the way, it is a good practice to cover the PIN pad when you punch the PIN, this should make it hard for the camaras to capture it. =-)

Compromised eftpos terminals use the terminal itself to capture and log the information. If you use a compromised terminal it will steal your card info and pin, there is no way to avoid it.

...Unless you destroy the terminal after the transaction is complete...

I've emailed ASB via the internet banking page, told them the places we visited in common and they said they would pass it on. I doubt I'll hear back about it but hopefully they at least look into it.

Out of curiosity, what supermarkets have ya'll Aucklanders used who were skimmed? The ones me and my friend used was the one at Lynn Mall, I think its a countdown? Quite often it was the self service checkout, but I'm fairly certain most of the units in the supermarkets are locked down quite securely so not sure how it could be tampered with unless its a staff member? I'm gonna be careful what I say because I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist haha.

Crowne Plaza Restaurant is on the same level as the hotel and a very nice restaurant. Doesn't really seem like the sort of place to skim cards but then again after patrons have had a few wines / beers it would probably be a great place to do it. It's the only place I have matched using my card with my dad's. Not saying it is that place but if you do ever happen to go there be vigilant.

Any yes covering the pin number is something I will be doing from now on. I will also be checking the machine for little cameras and card slots that look tampered. :S Looks like this is only going to get worse as technology gets cheaper and more accessible to the wrong crowds. If I did get a chance to find a skimming mechanism it wouldn't be the only thing I would be smashing! :)

I've had my chip card not work in a few dodgey places recently and the machine request a swipe. Always seemed dodgey. One was maccas at wairau in the drive thru. Another was bok mart in Mt eden and another was the Kwik e mart at auckland hospital.

Since my debit cards magnetic stripe is unreadable I ended paying with money rather than using my barely working old yellow swipe only eftpos card.

My understanding of this is that the machines can actually go offline and still take payments, but can't use the chips to do it. once it goes online again, it processes the transactions. I believe there's an agreement that the banks will honour transactions up to a certain value regardless.
