richms: Whats with burger king insisting on taking the card and sticking it in on their side?

I got yelled at by one of their staff after I reached over to get my card out from their side when they had buggered off to go and do something else while i was being served once.

BK has Paywave now, although I'd often reach over and grab my card when they had it at their side and never got yelled at :)

There are Subway stores that have integrated EFTPOS, but most don't. It really poses the question of why all stores don't use the same terminals. Bunnings are also very strange - there are stores that have integrated EFTPOS and stores that don't, despite using the same hardware.

As far as I'm concerned any premises that doesn't have integrated EFTPOS is simply inviting their staff to rip them off.

Mistakes can happen both ways, customers can be accidently overcharged, but they can also be undercharged. If staff want to rip you off then charging people a lesser amount is something that can be done very easily. If you've got a staff member manually entering a few hundred amounts per day, proving beyond reasonable doubt that a mistake was intentional rather than an honest mistake can be very difficult.

If you don't have integration you need to be ensuring that every single transaction is reconciled everyday against POS transactions, because it's a very easy way for staff to help themselves to cash if you don't.

Franchises. Probably no requirements for uniform POS?

I've been on both sides. Was charged $650 instead of $6.50 a month ago. Luckily I noticed before I left - only annoyance was that I had to show the sales assistant how to do a refund (seriously?). Also back when I was working in retail when just out of school, I charged someone $2500 instead of $250. I ended up chasing the guy through the mall to get him to come back for a refund.

Without integrated systems all it takes is a slip of the finger and a tired sales person for overcharging to occur. Heck as people have pointed out, a multitude of issues can arise.

Though how about the Star Mart (Wellington CBD) EFTPOS terminals - those things are mighty fast!

Pretty sure Subway has the same POS requirements all over - to integrate with their subcard/online order system at least.

DPS wouldn't even talk to us once we mentioned our POS systems were OS X, despite our software supporting their terminals (no idea if the software on them is different between countries though).
