Geektastic:
Not really any more astonishing than all the stuff about miracles and people coming back from the dead and supreme beings etc etc...!
fair point but I was keeping my personal remarks about that part of things to myself as to not risk firing up anyone unintentionally!

Any comments made are personal opinion and do not reflect directly on the position my current or past employers may have.
mattwnz: I realise it is in the legislation but what is the whole reasoning that led to churches etc being tax free. I am guessing it is because they did a lot of free work on the community. But it's this sort of thing still relevant in the 21st century? Especially how many are run like businesses with CEOs etc and paid staff
If you read further down in my comment you will see i agree with you. The law is out of date and lacks any public accountability. But for some reason this is enough to satisfy councils to give rate payers money where the only requirement of accountability is a photo of the end result(well at least Auckland Council).

hio77:Stan:Stu:Why stop at Destiny? Every other money making outfit in the country needs to pay tax, so why not religious groups? Most things seem to have evolved over time, but not this crazy law/rule/whatever.
Some religious groups like the sallies should be kept tax free IMHO
Recently was talking with a good friend who was moving, So going through all her clothes and such getting rid of whats not wanted..
Was actually surprised to hear her response, The local sallies turned away her with a few friends because they were Quite obviously of the, Pro gay sort.
While not totally unsurprising for a to the book christian group, was rather astonishing to hear in this day and age...
Strip Destiny Church from tax free status
gzt:Strip Destiny Church from tax free status
Can anyone outline what practical difference would result?
It's about sending a message that what they're saying/standing for is unacceptable and preventing such situations in the future from either this or any other orgnaisation.
And secondly, it would strip them of their tax free status, therefore essentially increasing the costs involved to run their "charity"/reducing their annual surplus, etc.
I signed the petition to strip Destiny Church of its charity status not because of Brian Tamaki's remarks but the 'Church' has spent large sums of money of expensive house, boats, holiday for the 'Bishop' which I feel is not the proper function of a religious institution.
This is a free country, Tamaki is entitled to say what he feels is appropriate. It is up to the rest of us to respond. Personally I find his remarks abhorrent, unchristian, and very close to hate speech. I am disturbed by the lack of response from our; political, academic, commercial and particularly religious leaders. The silence of the latter is perhaps more frightening.
Can someone enlighten me as to Tamaki's theological credentials? Is it true his so-called 'bishophship' come from a mail-order college?

My wife's church does a lot of social welfare work and if they lost their tax free status they could quite rightly give the one fingered salute and stop this welfare and say it's up to the government to do it.
As for the likes of Sanitarium Food, yes remove their tax free status as they are a business..

we live in free country, people can speak what they will within reason. I wonder if people would have been as upset if it hadn't been for the earthquake the next day.
And talking of stripping all Churches of charity status is a bit harsh. There are genuine ones that wouldn't survive if that happened. I know ones where the pastor works full time outside the Church. They help the homeless and others when they can. Not flash but tidy buildings done up over decades.
The Destiny Church needs to be scrutinized. Is it a genuine Church. Does it help the community etc. Flash luxurious lifestyle and new houses and cars for themselves. Well people can think for themselevses.
Ones where they have a commercial arm eg. Sanitarium, then they should be paying taxes on the profits.

That's great, and they should keep it for the charity part of the church.
I don't see why entertainment venues that just so happen to call themselves a church should not pay tax tho, its something that other stadiums and events centers have to do.

joker97: Destiny owns Sanitarium?Nope. Seventh Day Adventist does. The "they" is Churches. If any have commercial arm then the commercial arm should be taxed
gzt:Okay I must have read it wrong on the Monday. I read it that he had said it about the Christchurch Quake in his preaching on Sunday then the Kaikoura quake occurred around midnight. Yes definitely disgustful if he said it on Monday straight after.Gilco2:

It wasn't next day as far as I know.
His scapegoating comments were made after the earthquake.
I think his claim, was that he had quoted from Leviticus the day before something about the earth spewing forth or something the day before.
