mrdrifter: This seems to have grown to the point where there should be prosecutions for breaches of the Privacy Act at a minimum retaining PII well past the point it's required let alone failing to keep it secure.

Perhaps the financial regulators ( FMA, RBNZ) might be able to illuminate us on why the NZ clients data was allowed to be transferred to OZ in the first place, and how NZ privacy law was being adhered to...

Then there is the reputation damage to Kiwibank, who has been farming out its personal loan business, because that is obviously something to hard for a publicly NZ owned bank to do...

My dad's a Gem customer and recieved a robo call from a NZ number at the end of last week stating that someone had spent $900 at Countdown and to press 1 if he didn't recognize the payment etc

He got another call today saying something about immigration... Usually I'd just say it's a scam call but remembering this breach you start to wonder whether it's a scam lol

I doubt immigration would greet you with a robo call though

Their initial email:

... As a valued Latitude customer, we thank you for your understanding and patience. Our services remain available and you should have confidence in using them. ...

Stuffs article:

..

Latitude Financial Services chief executive Ahmed Fahour said because the attack remained active, it had taken its platforms offline and was unable to service customers or retailers.

“We cannot restore this capability immediately, however we are working to do so gradually over the coming days and ask our customers for their continued patience.”

...

One of these things is not like the other.

On the back of @wellygary's post, it sounds like they're in a running gun battle for Australia-NZ worse privacy breach (14 million). It looks like the Optus (~10 million) and Medibank (9.7 million) records have been dethroned.

Hmm... Interesting fact and I didn't link this. I hardly ever get them but the other day I got a call from an Australian Number also with "Your Amazon Prime subscription is renewing for $99 - press 1 to talk to an operator if you wish to cancel"

I was driving at the time but pressed 1 and said "You dirty f**king scammer how do you sleep at night *swears in Hindi*" and they swore at me and dropped the call. Haven't got any since.

Not sure if this is simply coincidence and there is a scam going around or if this is related.

Ive been getting the amazon prime emails for a couple months now, just delete them. Also had 3 or 4 emails over the last couple weeks all displaying the same “bill” for a macafee subscription, they get ignored as well

I've obviously been caught up in a number of breaches/attacks, as I have had a really large escalation in the number of scam and phishing calls lately - all to my mobile phone. So frustrating.

I can't think of any connection I have to Latitude as I haven't applied for any finance apart from mortgages with a bank and I've have the same credit card for 15+ years. For the past week I've seen an uptick in scam calls, going from never getting a single scam call to a record of 4 yesterday.

My theory is the scammers are just expanding the set of random numbers they are dialing. Interestingly, the caller ID on all calls have all been from 021 yyy zzzz where yyy is the first part of my number and zzzz has been random.

They seem to come in waves. I was getting smashed with them for a while last year but it seems to have tailed off recently. It probably helps that I no longer answer calls from anyone not in my contacts list, as I suspect the nuisance callers are inclined to de-prioritise numbers with a history of not being answered.

I have never been a Latitude customer but I figure that my phone number has inevitably leaked from other sources.

Has the data been dumped onto the dark web yet?

For example, A drivers license is all you need to rego a car online, and have the tickets go to that identity.

If this get dumped online it is gonna be a mess. Will they have to reissue a new License to everyone?

I've had a few of these over the last couple of years; I doubt it's related.

P.S; Edited the quote above, because Mr Murphy is clearly allowed to say more edgy things than I am!

General rule of thumb: you normally have to "opt in" (i.e. approve) a financial transaction, rather than "opt out" (i.e. decline it); so if you receive a text or call suggesting you need to do something to PREVENT the money leaving your account, that should raise flags.

Personally, I'm not going to wait to find out and already paid $38 to replace my "stolen" drivers license

I just happened to replace my license last week, and realised afterwards I can get Latitude to pay for it. Pretty sure a drivers license would have been the only document I gave them to prove identity.

Have they released the method to claim for the license replacement?
