lokhor: Anyone else go to X-Ale recently?

@kiwitrc Hashigo is pretty cool - it's described as a cult beer bar. My mate started a brewery called Funk Estate with some dudes recently and they launched it there a week ago.

Are they selling it there? If so I will give it a crack when we go there.

Anyone else here tried the La Trappe range? Unbelievable value, 750ml for around $7. Dutch beer available from New World, my personal favourite is the Dubble.

Boundary Road fan here too. Very fond of their Pilsner and their Pale Ale.

Reasonably priced too, local New World had it at $22 for a box of 12 a couple of weeks back.

Here also, got on their tasting panel for the IPA. Received and IPA and IPB (clever) to try. Preferred the IPA and I think thats the one that ended up being Mumbo Jumbo. Also fan of the Chocolate Moose.

Used to drink Monteiths as a having a few on Friday beer but DB are pricing it out of reality, so its Boundary Road and Stoke Amber on a Friday these days.

+1, although the Tripel is a bit too strong for my liking.  Looking at the website they do a Quadrupel as well, that'd have you dancing on the tables after a couple.

Thorndon New World has a fantastic selection, although they can get a bit pricey.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Cucapa range.  Hesitant at first given my previous experience with Mexican beers was Corona and the like, but suitably impressed with the flavour of this range, particularly the pale ale.

Good score.  How did you apply for that?

kyhwana2: OMG beer.
Going down to beervana for my 2nd year this year.
If you get in in the first session early, you can follow people in who tilt their glasses and spill their beer tokens everywhere and don't even notice.
I tried to give peoples tokens back the first two times I saw this happen, but they melted into the crowd too quickly for me to catch up, after that it was all "Score! Free beer".

You guys in Wellington are so lucky. All we have here in Hamilton is House (a craft beer pub), Gothernburg (a tapas places) and the Ruakura Campus club (a chartered club), for good beer.

Anyone in Hamilton should come along to the House (on hood street) beer club on Thursdays from 5, a new craft beer each week on tap.

What he said - I was down in Wellywood a week or two back, and popped into Thorndon New World, talk about a kid in a candy store!

I do enjoy a pint at House, and I'm planning on being at the Campus Club for their beerfest in a couple of weeks - craft beer, plus some home brewers showing off, mmmmmmm.

I grabbed a sixpack of Chocolate Moose on the weekend, rather nice, definitely a good one for the season. Liking the Stoke range as well.

I've always been rather skeptical of 'flavoured' beers to be honest. You wouldn't go out and buy buzzard flavoured chicken, would you?

But given the positive comments in this thread about the chocolate moose I will succumb to peer pressure on this occasion and have a crack at it this weekend.

At Beervana I attended I had a go at Christmas Cake beer. It wasn't something I would want to drink a dozen of but it was tasty. It made me think that this is what was cool about Beervana, without a festival like that the only people who would have got to taste something like that would be the guy who made it and his friends.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Have never made it to Beervana but we have Blues Brews and BBQs each year here in Blenheim and get Greenman, 3Boys etc making an appearance.
Im quite partial to a good wheat beer, i havn't stumbled on any decent locally made ones so have to look at the imported section. Schneider Weisse, Hoegaarden, Hoffbrau. All good drops.
If anyone knows of a good local wheat beer similar to the ones mentioned, im keen to hear about it!

edit: Ninja'd.. Not sure if ive tried 3Boys wheat beer, i will look out for it.

I'm a big IPA fan and loving the ones from Epic, Tuatara, Stoke and Boundary Road.

When i'm in Wellington I'm usually found at
- Fork and Brewer
- Bru House
- Tap House
- Malthouse
- Hashigo Zake
- D4

I'm open to other recommendations.

Back in Auckland things are improving bar wise, but the long drive home tends to restrict me to just one.

Its not flavoured as such - its a Porter, and therefore has a chocolatey malt character. It is on the sweet end of the scale too, not as bitter as I was expecting from a dark beer.
