But given the positive comments in this thread about the chocolate moose I will succumb to peer pressure on this occasion and have a crack at it this weekend.

Its not flavoured as such - its a Porter, and therefore has a chocolatey malt character. It is on the sweet end of the scale too, not as bitter as I was expecting from a dark beer.

The best way to describe it is "taste wrapped in flavour with a double shot of aaaaahhhhhh!!" lol

I've done my share of Beervana festivals and don't think i'll go again this year.

The most memorable beer from all of them was a bacon flavoured brew from a local Wellington small scale brewery who's name slips my mind at the moment. They made so little of it that they were only selling it in tasting size for 10min at the start of every hour. It blew my mind and is the only flavoured beer i've enjoyed.

Current beer fav's are in no particular order:
Invercargil Breweries - Pitch Black - A lighter dark beer with lighter hops. The mrs even likes it!
Yeastie Boys - Pot Kettle Black - Similar to above but a bit more hoppy I reckon
Emersons - 1812 - I could drink it all day
Stoke (Bomber) - Biscuit Lager/Oatmeal Stout/Smokey Ale - All are great with food
Hallertau - Beastwars - Hoppy and citrusy, can't have too many myself but are good to kick off an event.
Tuatara - X1 - This is a strong one, a little hard to find but totally worth it.
Epic/Dogfish Head - Portamarillo - VERY hard to find now but really something to try if someone has it randomly. Very smokey.

garvani: Have never made it to Beervana but we have Blues Brews and BBQs each year here in Blenheim and get Greenman, 3Boys etc making an appearance.
Im quite partial to a good wheat beer, i havn't stumbled on any decent locally made ones so have to look at the imported section. Schneider Weisse, Hoegaarden, Hoffbrau. All good drops.
If anyone knows of a good local wheat beer similar to the ones mentioned, im keen to hear about it!

edit: Ninja'd.. Not sure if ive tried 3Boys wheat beer, i will look out for it.

I'm a big fan of wheat beers too.
Baroona Brewery on Waiheke Island used to do a good wheat beer (don't know if they still do).
I'm enjoying Schofferhofer at the moment.

Ive seen that on the shelves at my local New World, the price has put me off trying it as its quite a step up from the others, and i didn't want to risk it.. I shall give it a go!

Malthouse is my fav local, Hashigo Zake is cool.

Just looking at that menu, very interesting sounding beers listed. How many did you try and what stood out?

Did 15. The pencil numbers are the ones I had in roughly that order. Very different to Beervana - you got a paddle that held 5 tasters which you wrote the numbers of the beers you wanted on then took them to the bar. Once filled you returned to your seat at big tables to taste and discuss as mentioned earlier in this thread.

The Invercargill chilli chocolate #11, #37 for something different and I think #60 (from memory) for the hoppy kick in the mouth that I love.

Countdown sometimes have it on special at around $16 for a six pack - not bad considering it is 500ml bottles

Oh man. That's like marmite/vegemite. You either love it or hate it.

Personally I hate it, omg the phenols.
There's also the xeRrex, which is double rex, basically. (Havn't tried that yet, not sure I want to!)
