PhantomNVD: does the age continue counting when it's sitting in the bottle in your cupboard? if so you'll have a few powerful 25yo in very little time :)

No, it doesn't age in the bottle. It's not like wine.

Well, you will get changes, it is being exposed to air and sometimes light.  The higher alcohol content will get it stable for longer, and there are less particulates to flocculate out.

Strictly speaking wine is "aged" on wood too.  It just ages in the bottle.

And Port, Sherry et al should be drunk within about three months.  I lost a quarter bottle of port once, and when I found it six months latter it had gone a bit chunky.

freitasm: We had beer, books, movies, TV, coffee threads. Why not this then?

I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker XR (aged 21 years) in Sydney yesterday. Very smooth, although quite heavy:
Usually drink Glenlivet or Talisker when out and about but this one is really nice.

I don't drink much at all but I do have a selection of single malt Scotch on hand which I dip into from time to time (some are from my wedding 10 years ago, so I REALLY don't drink much!)

Available to visitors of taste are:

Lagavullin 16 yo
Laphroig Quarter Cask
Glenlivet 18 yo
Balvenie Founders
Bruichladdich 12 yo
Glenfiddich 18 yo
Ardbeg 10 yo
Tamnavulin 12
Dalmore 12
Caol Isla 16 yo

My personal favourites are the peaty Islay malts and the Quarter Cask in particular is an excellent dram when the rain is lashing the windows!

Ha! Alas not.

I still want a bottle from the year I was born, but 46 yo whisky is VERY expensive...!

True, but whisky won't spoil as quickly as wine after being open. And it won't age in the bottle itself before being open as quickly as well.

An awful lot of tosh is written about whisky.

It is just distilled beer stored in oak casks to leach out wood tannins to give colour and flavour.

After bad-mouthing whisky romance I tell you that I like to drink it.

I reckon any whisky, including rotgut, is enhanced by being cut with water that trickles from peat bogs high in the Southern Alps.

Mmmm, I think I will have a wee dram of Lamerlaw.

Obsequious hypocrite

Some open up more with a little water and some it spoils. But you never needmore than a few drops.

If you get the chance to go to a decent whisky tasting I recommend it. The flavours and variety available will change what you buy.

Only if you're intending to use it to wash down a deep-fried Mars Bar.

Exactly what SWMBO does - what a waste of taste. Any she wonders why we don't buy good stuff.

Your father in law appears to be correct.

TimA: I have never had Whiskey before. might need to try it :).

Maybe the Auckland GZ IRL might be the appropriate occasion? In the company of like-minded consenting adults and under MF's tutelage laughing

Wouldn't a hip flask breech the fluid limit and flammable substance regs? I don't no but some of the rules are odd
