billgates: Here is some of my Whisky collection. I got the JW XR in 2012. Still have not opened it yet. My absolute favourite IMO most under rated Whisky in the world in Johnnie Walker Black Label. I love my Whisky's and only drink them straight. The Bunnahabhain is 31 hears old. Its rubbish.

Late to the party here, but is that the Bunnahabhain 97 heavily peated (signatory bottling) (matured in hogsheads?)

I don't usually like Bunnahabhain, but quite like that. I'm a fan of the heavy islay, with Talisker, Laphroig, and Ardberg some of favs.

edit: If you are looking for a good value whisky, keep an eye out for the Glenfarclas 105 10 yo. (cask strength, 60%)
about $100 for the 700ml goes nicely with a few drops of water to get a fuller flavour, or even a cube or 2.

JimmyC: If full and smokey is your preferred flavour profile, try Johnny Walker Double Black. I believe it's only available duty free, haven't seen it anywhere else. It has additional Islay Malts in it making it much more full, round and smokey than the standard black label. Very reasonably priced too at around $60 for 1ltr.

Its available, but the 1L version is only for the duty free market. The 700ml retail version I've picked up for $50 on sale, but its usually around $75.
I enjoy it as an everyday sipper, but for the price, I think I won't be buying it regularly. Paying single malt prices for blends that are 40% ABV, is something I simply refuse to do now.

Bunnahabhain Toiteach is the pinnacle of smokey Islay whisky for me. Shame its no longer available.
You may want to look out for and independent bottling of Gordon and MacPhail Bunnahabhain Heavily Peated 8 year old.

I know a couple of lads that enjoy the glenmorangie Quinta ruba. They also tried the yamazaki Santorum something...not the cherry Oaks one. Said it was nice and smooth but a bit powerful.

Out of interest, why do you choose not to pay for a good blend? IMO - as much, if not more care is taken to produce a blend that tastes good. I like the blended malt Monkey Shoulder which contains the Glenfiddich 12, which I also enjoy (These two examples are certainly on the low end but I can't see why it wouldn't scale up if it was really good).

I cant really comment on my love of single malts without making myself sound like a total alcoholic. Anyways, Highland park produced (imo) the best video for anyone who wants to taste the good stuff

I do enjoy the Islay whiskies. Most recent I had was the Laphroaig 10 yr. I really want to get an Islay bottle but I have a very small collection and no money at this time of year (well not for whisky!). I'm trying to get an idea of what is a good deal. The plan is to start building up the blends and then have one from each region in Scotland, then start on the worlds and then start again.

Very simple reviews, some are long - but I really like they way he speaks.

I appreciate the reviewers who don't make a big deal about how to take whisky. They have their clear preference but don't care if someone has ice, water or neat. Pretty sure Coke is universally frowned upon haha - although I add a mixer when I have a whisky I do not like...

I love Whisky and also am super lucky to be located and friendly with the crowd at Whisky Galore here in Christchurch (an amazing shop, always worth a visit, they are online also).

If unfamiliar with this information, then you will be delighted to know about their 'Big Event' DRAM FEST.
I will be going, as will many others. No better place to try a few drops of something you have never heard of or considered purchasing before.

Along with all these other amazing drops, I found a lovely little dram from Hankey Bannister at the last Dram Fest, called "Heritage Blend". This is my regular, I quite often purchase a bottle when I buy something else either for myself or someone else. Funnily enough this is not actually on the Whisky Galore website, but they have stock every time I visit.

Also if you are into Whisky and in Christchurch or visiting Christchurch there is a cocktail lounge called "The Last Word". Certainly worth a visit =).

"With or without coke?"
I always cringe a little when people drink fine whisky with coke, but at the end of the day whisky was made to be drunk and enjoyed. If someone enjoys it with some coke. So be it.
I prefer mine with water, I used to be a "purist" but now my palette is a little worn down. So I now taste test without water, add a little, re-test, then add more whisky or water as required to finish the desired flavour.
If it burns, add some water, I feel the burn takes most of the flavour away, and I usually find the burning on my toungue happens with whiskeys 43% or higher. This is a loose translation however as I have also had a 54% that was so smooth to the taste/drink that it required no water what so ever.

For Islay lovers, I cannot recommend Kilchoman highly enough.

First new distillery on the island in 124 years and producing outstanding whisky. They even have one bottling where they grow the barley on the surrounding farm!

I'm disappointed Dramfest isn't closer to home! In fact, I think I will make a special effort to go in 2017. It looks good and from some of the photos, super popular.

I drink it the same way, try it neat and then couple of drops of water if required.

I am now almost at the end of the second bottle of Lagavulin here. Beautiful aroma, but the wife knows when I open the bottle from another room.

Anyway, bought a bottle of Talisker Dark Storm when coming back from Sydney a couple of months back and it's really nice. Also have a bottle of The Glenlivet, which goes a bit slower than these other two.
