Geektastic: They recreated the whisky found at Scott's Hut. Would love to get some of that.

I have had the privilege of sampling a dram of this! A very tasty and interesting drop :)

Can anyone advise where the most affordable place to get a bottle of decent Islay whisky from in NZ? Would it be duty free? Is there any other Islay producer that make something better at the same price point than that Bowmore (std 12 year stuff)?

Many thanks.

I'd definitely bookmark Whisky and More. Best prices I've seen in NZ, and they have weekly specials to tempt you too.

As for the Islay question, I got a bottle of Finlaggen Old Reserve for Christmas and am really enjoying it (disclaimer: I'm new to the Whisky scene). It's an Islay single malt of unknown origin. My understanding is that they bottle from surplus casks from Islay distilleries. There is a lot of speculation that it may be a young Lagavulin, but nobody knows for sure.

I also purchased a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black, in a pursuit to find affordable smoky/peaty whisky. I quite enjoyed it, but now that I've found Finlaggen, that would probably be my current budget dram :-)

Thanks for the advice! That site certainly seems a good place to start, and that specific one you link to seems an affordable entry point; will order one soon, I reckon...

I was in Moore Wilson's yesterday (a Wellington food/drink Mecca, for those that don't know it), and they seemed to have a fairly good selection; and certainly better than the two duty free stores I checked out online (JR and Aelia), which appear to provide a very narrow range.

I also just got an email from my brother who got me interested in whisky, saying he's left me some kind of 'night cap' in my woodshed!

Dratsab: When travelling overseas or coming back, online purchasing of alcohol (any product actually) from a duty free store is the way to go as it's generally a bit cheaper than purchasing at the store. This is because airport companies take a [decent] cut from all till sales.

Nice tip - So the online prices (for the duty free stores) are cheaper than what you would see in person at the airport? Because I was comparing online duty free sites to sites like Whisky and More which would make it even worse at the airport!

I've developed a bit of a taste for unpeated single malts in the last couple of years. While I will drink the peatier ones, I much prefer the other end of the scale. The Macallan has to be my favourite (I have the Amber at the moment - Macallan have stopped selling whisky with age statements), but I also have a couple of bottles of Glenmorangie (Original and Nectar D'or, but the whole range is excellent), a Glenlivet and a Dalwhinnie 15yr. The Dalwhinnie is especially good at the price point.

Interesting. Did you find you initially preferred peatier ones? I've only been a whisky drinker since 2015, after looking for a replacement for the beer I have to give up after being diagnosed Coeliac. I've been to couple of tastings, and at this early stage of my whisky journey I definitely prefer ones where the smoky, peaty flavours shine.

The difference between online duty free and store duty free isn't huge but it is [usually] there. I'm back at work from Saturday (at Wellington Airport) so I'll do a little comparative research. Compared to Whisky and More - duty free's probably always going to come out worse :-)

Had some of that after my dad's funeral back in March last year. Very nice!

The Macallan produce whiskies which are very hard to beat! See if you can grab yourself an Auchentoshen next time you travel over here. A triple distilled lowland malt with some very nice flavours.

fizzychicken: this is my next

http://www.worldwhiskiesawards.com/2015/single-malt-whisky/scotch-islands.html

So this turned up today.
10/10 for packaging (the distillery not the courier)
9/10 for taste. (perhaps a tad sweeter than I expetced)
I recommend it. a lot.

oxnsox: Just sampling a BenRiach Sauterne Finish...

I attended a tasting session a coupla years back when the BenRiach guy was over here. An astonishing range, and lucky to taste a few bottles from way above my budget range.
Who is selling BenRiach now?

I've tried it too - at Scott base no less :). Whisky was ok - setting was superb !

Btw - my avatar is the mailbox outside the original Scott base camp. The milk is of course frozen
