jonathan18:

Maybe it's the arrival of the (relatively) colder weather, or perhaps it's the inundation of junk mail this week given it's world whisk(e)y day this Saturday, but I've found myself thinking about buying a new bottle, but trying something new. Being relatively unexposed to the wide range of options I'm interested in recommendations.

My preference is definitely towards Islay single malts or similar; my go-to buy has been Bowmore 12; My FiL got me a bottle of Caol Ila Distiller's Edition, which I have really loved but clearly too much as it's nearly finished! Another one I've liked (but not owned) is Talisker Dark Storm. I also have a bottle of Ardbeg 10, which I really am not a huge fan of.

So, based on those preferences, what would people recommend at, say, around $100 or less?

Many here seem to love Laphroaig, but I'm once bitten, twice shy given the 10 year's placement on some of the flavour maps (as reliable and useful as these are?!), being so close to the Ardbeg that I don't really like.

This is the 'map' I'm talking about:

Anyway, appreciate any recommendations.

Dark Storm is an excellent compromise for those that want some peat but not the heavy peat found in Islay malts. The peat flavour in the west coast island whiskies gets progressively weaker the more northerly the island is so Dark Storm (or similar) would be a good recommendation. Another good one would be something from the Highland Park warrior series such as Einar - although Orkney is not a west coast island, there are still some peaty flavours in there.

Ge0rge: My lovely significant other will be bringing home a bottle of Talisker Dark Storm during her next trip overseas, I'm waiting with barely contained excitement.

Only one :-O

Ordered a second bottle of Lagavulin Distiller's Edition last week, just to be told by the courier company the bottle was broken in transit. A call to Whisky & More and a second bottle was dispatched with no delay. The replacement bottle arrived safely today. Crisis averted.

How do you find the Distillers Edition in comparison to the standard 16yo from Lagavulin @freitasm?

It is definitely not as peaty but still tastes smokey. It's not a big mouthful, a bit less intense. Still great taste - this is my second bottle of Distiller's Edition.

Also worth noting is the Glenmorangie 18 year old Extremely Rare Edition. It's a beautiful whisky - finished my second bottle recently too. And while at in-laws I found a treasure trove of whisky - he was CEO at a well known institution and despite being of Scottish family doesn't drink whisky... And all those gifts just sitting there for years. So I found a mid-1980s bottle of Glenmorangie 18 year old and opened it to compare. Beautiful like its more recen version but somewhat a bit sweeter.

Thanks. I was drinking the Lagavulin 16yo and a Glenmorangie over the weekend, I shall have to get a Distillers Edition to try I think.

This reminded me that having been teetotal for at least 2 months, I should dust the bottles...!!

I did that and found a bottle that my wife and I bought for our guests to drink when we got married in 2006. It is still a third full. I should stop buying the stuff really, since I have realised that the idea of having it available to drink is more appealing to me than actually drinking it.

Decided to unlock this as colder weather is coming and many of us would like to get in-front of the fire with a nice single malt.

I often do small networking jobs for people but most of the time demand payment in Whisky more to see what I get (and try things I wouldn't otherwise buy). This bottle however came from my parents and is one I never thought of trying but has become one of my most favorite "Whiskey's" - https://www.kiwispiritdistillery.co.nz/ourspirits/p/waitui-whiskey

Very unique flavor from the Manuka honey mead barrels, smooth and way too easy to drink. Really recommend if you want something a bit unique.
