Looks like GSM Arena have managed to obtain a prototype of this device, and have done a "preview". Makes interesting reading! Here's the URL:

Enjoy!

It looks very nice. My recent Nokia E65 purchase was a switch back to Nokia after 4 SE phones, the P1 would be enough to switch me back again as I still prefer SE's over Nokia.

Here is another review:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Sony_Ericsson_P1i-hands_on_preview.php

Looks good.  Anyone tried a similar keypad?  (ie:  two letters per button?)  any good?

Thanks Wonderstuff, that's an excellent article! I shall be watching this handset with interest, as a possible replacement for my trusty but elderly P900i.

On the keyboard question - anyone out there own a M600i? Looks like the keyboards may be very similar, or even identical.

Yes keypad is the same as p1.I am keeping an eye on the price but should retail $1000 in Hk.

W960i will be the next model up from M600i

UIQ3 + Sony Ericsson = the worst phone money can buy!!

The P1 is essentially a p990 with a little extra RAM  - needed because of major memory leakage. (more info)

I will not be buying this phone, having owned a p800, p990, p910 and fianlly a p990.

Check out all of the disgruntled p990 users here and here and decide whether you would trust another phone using basically the same setup.

Sony Ericsson will not receive any of my hard earned money in the near future.

You could give it two processors and it would still be a piece of...!

If you enjoy a game of "spot the bug", grab one of these phones...

I own a SE P900, and this handset has been 100% reliable for heavy-ish business and casual use. While I admit its technology has been eclipsed by later devices, I'm sticking with it until the P1 has been thoroughly tested and evaluated.

I have heard a number of grumbles about the P990, and personally suspect that SE rushed it on to the market before it had been developed sufficiently. It's also a rather a rather clunky design, I feel.

I'll wait until the P1 has been officially released and widely tested before forming any opinion on it - it might be a winner, who knows?

If you didn't know.MIcrosoft Windows Mobile and Nokia symbian mobiles also have bugs like the earlier version of windows mobile how you need to obtain bluetooth driver for it to work with bluetooth products like handsfree.

Then nokia symbian mobiles for instance the Nokia 6670 how it took 30 seconds to boot up and so hard to navigate thru the menu because it was so slow

Even the best mobile Nokia N73 the one Im using is buggy.Sometimes I have to reset the bluetooth and delete the bluetooth profile on my mobile and pair it up again for it to work.

All mobiles have problems even the ones without symbian os.

Like Nokia 6111 for instance. It has bugs.It was just sent to Nokia hk for repair and had a software upgrade

Nokia 8310 had reception problems

Motorola Maxx V6 also had problems where the motherboard faulty and was replace.

Give it sometime.I must admit P990 is a horribe device .Everyone knows that but P1 maybe better.Who knows.

Symbian mobiles improves overtime .Each one has a faster processor and ram to jot the speed up a little.

I remember I had nokia n70 and it was also very slow. But after upgrading to N73 things became much faster but still there were problems

If it's anything like the M600 (which it appears to be by form factor) , I'm staying away.

Check out how it has 'soft buttons' on the bottom of the screen, but no way to activate these other than tapping on the screen. This, plus the lack of joypad, makes it basically unusable one-handed. Sure you can use the jog-dial, but that won't get you access to a lot of the sub-menus and stuff.

Check out my comparison of the Nokia E70 and SE M600i here.

The P990 doesn't just have a few bugs... it has many bugs. The introduction of the P1 will not get rid of these major bugs as it is basically a p990 packed into new hardware. The memory leaks mean that after a few days the phone is down to only 2MB of free RAM and no multi tasking is available. Adding more RAM to the P1 will make this issue a little better but it is just prolonging the inevitable reboot that p990 users will be familiar with. Swiss Manager Pro is a great piece of software to reclaim the memory but having to run that every day is a little frustrating.

The one glimmer of hope P990 users had was the possibility of a firmware upgrade at the time of the P1 release which would introduce features like a Today Screen and a SIP client but rumour has it that SE is not going to release any new firmware.

Agreed, the p900 (UIQ2) was a great phone but the lack of WIFI makes it obsolete to me. You may be waiting a long time for the P1 to be thoroughly tested. SE has had many an oportunity (1 year) to fix a lot of the bugs. Many lists exist on the internet outlining all of the current issues. Only a handful of the bugs have been sorted and with each new firmware release there are new bugs.

PS. It is great being able to have my own little rant about SE.  They have never listened to any of their users concerns so it is good to hear everyones opinion about them.

This was because Symbian UIQ had alot of bugs.It was an unstable symbian operating system. But wait until P1 lets give SE a chance.

They have had a whole generation of phones to have a chance.  They released the latest buggy firmware last week.  The P1 won't magically fix this.
