Are the maps on the phones memory? Or does it have to stream maps over wifi or 3g/gprs? As far as I have read, the nokia maps NZ maps are a bit _ _ _ _, and I have seen on the fourms there are alternatives. My question is, if Nokia maps is really that bad, whats the best alternative, and which ones do or dont need to stream maps?

The maps are loaded on the handset, not streamed.

Maps 2.0 full release (its in Beta at the moment) "should" have the full NZ maps from what I understand.

There are other options that people use successfully (MGMaps is one), but I haven't used them personally so don't have any opinion of them.

Of the freeware maps solutions MGMaps is probably the best (there is a way to store maps, search here and you'll see how, removes the need to use  data connection and download maps as you go). Nav4All recently announced NZ maps support, its freeware with voice guidance, but it requires a data connection and I'm not sure how good it actually is.

Garmin Mobile XT is commerical software, but its easily the best NZ solution out there - free New Zealand maps available that are very, very good, full voice guidance, no data connection required.

And yes, we continue to wait and hope for actual Nokia Maps...

I'm sure it will happen eventually, but I'm well past holding my breath waiting for that!
