So I bought an N95 8gb and turns out its an N95-4 Which is the american one.

It had firmware 1.2.011 i think it was on there? Now it has 20.2.005.

Either way, under the network settings there is:

Dual
UTMS
GSM

GSM works fine obviously, and UTMS is 3G but it can't get any reception.

any ideas?

That particular model only works on UMTS 850/1900, neither of which is compatible with VFNZ.  You may get limted coverage when Telecom get their UMTS network online.

Telecom nz will launch with UMTS 2100 and GSM 850 so you will continue to still get 2g coverage when telecom go UMTS 850mhz the handset will then show 3g but this could be rural areas only. There is nothing you can do to that handset to get it working on any current 3g network in nz.
