I am wondering do you have to pay an imports tax when you buy a phone on ebay. I was reading on the customs site that you have to pay 12.5% of the marked value (if its value is over 400 or something), but i've brought things in before and never been charged! So is it just not enforced? Or have i been lucky?

I have the same query. So how does it work? If you buy a phone on ebay and its say $500, how do you get charged? Does the phone pass through customs and they call you to pay the imports tax, or is it just invoiced?

Cheers

You will be charged by the freight forwarder who handles the goods in NZ. All the major players (Fedex, UPS, DHL) are customs agents and will handle this themsevles. They'll tell you payment is required and you have to arrange that before the goods will be released.

I haven't imported any goods that have required payment through regular post for a few years now. Last time I did this I was sent a letter from NZ Post and had to go to Customs myself, pay the required costs and then send this to NZ Post who arranged release of the goods.
