Thanks for that Nik.

It is difficult determining what is fact and what is fiction from the various rants of some on Nokia user forums Smile

I think that's likely to be forums in general ... all the sane ones hang out here :-)

Remote Wipe is supported on New Symbian devices as long as you're using Exchange Server 2007 SP2 and above.

lyonrouge: Ah, tip for hard resetting, when you press down-volume/camera/menu/power together, release the power first after (I was releasing menu first and that cancelled the reset)

Or you can dial * # 7370 #from the dialler screen (this does a factory reset on any Symbian device and all new S40 devices). The power-on key combination is only required if you some how can't access the dialler.

Thanks, I had read conflicting accounts of what the dialler reset actually did, i.e. user data wipe only or factory reset, but that clears it up should I have to hard reset again.

ps. do you know if the N8 supports the ActiveSync Remote Wipe feature?

I only have 2003 currently. Migrating to 2010 and was going to use remote wipe to clear all the phones before establishing new connections to 2010 (importantly, record the device ID Exchange creates for the devices so I know which is which). Instead, I'll use the following to clear the device and verify that it performs the same hard reset as the key combination.

I'll use * # 7370 #from the dialler screen

After the hard-reset I have not configured Hotmail or Gmail (only Exhanage) and my battery life is now exceptional, used 1 bar all day Sunday. Will be interesting to see how much battery is used today (weekdays have much higher usage).

hmmm, after the hard reset I went to install JoikuSpot from OVI store and it wants $2? I bought this when I first got the phone and expected that it would be available to me from the store at no charge?

Yep, that is my understanding as well.

I presume you are trying to re-download Joikuspot from the "My Stuff" section of Ovi store?

I'm having the exact same problem with QuickOffice.  I did a reset to free up memory on the C drive.

I took a look on the Nokia discussion groups and found out the following.

Go to Ovi store and click on the "Support" tab at the top right of the home page, then in the box on the left of the support page under the heading "Support for Ovi Services" click on "Contact us" and fill in the form with your issue.

They get back to you usually within 24 hours, they may come back wanting more details like your IMEI number and the app transaction ID number, which I think is the receipt number you should have received in the email you got from Ovi with your purchase details. Hopefully you kept that email.

Thanks, yes I have the email so I'll start on that path. Not as nice as iTunes in this respect, but iTunes has had a lot more time in this area so one can expect the odd glitch.

Since I posted earlier I remembered I bought the upgraded (Premium) version of Joiku from the Joiku website, probably after downloading the Lite version from OVI store.

As a result I had downloaded the Premium version to my desktop and installed it to my phone from there.

Like you I have been reinstalling stuff and I was able to reinstall the Premium version of Joiku from the saved file. Perhaps you might have done the same and have a saved copy of the premium version that you could reinstall.

Does the N8 have the compass function? The N95 had a really simple feature whereby you could just pick a landmark and it gave you a distance to it. IE for golf. Can't seem to find it in the N8?

Is it not possible to re-install from back-up?

re QuickOffice.  Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer the install from c: to e: without losing the license key?

I didn't use a backup as I didn't know what was causing my battery drain problem. I have hard reset the device and been applying applications one at a time.

At the moment I'm trying to use USB connection, with the usual "dead network" syndrome, which I'm convinced is Vodafone. I've got a XT Android right next to it on USB connection and it remain operational all the time.

Since the hard-reset my battery life is now astounding. Key differences on the reload from previous state:

BlueTooth off
No MicroSD card inserted
Only 1 email (Exchange) configured (used to have gmail & hotmail also)

Is there away to have the phone screen light up when a text message received? Rather than sitting dark and having the little menu key light up.

You might want to try Nokia Sleeping Screen. It's a new beta on Betalabs which has some very handy and power-conscious onscreen notification images.
