nikrolls: This is a third party solution called Alien Dalvik by Myriad. It looks very promising, though I haven't heard any updates since June on MeeGo availability. The company is definitely still working on it though, because they just announced that it will also come to iOS.

I would consider the N9 if it does support Android Apps - otherwise support is quite limited compared to the big guns - Android and iOS in terms of apps.

crikarika: I know this is kinda simple, but will it run on Telecom's XT network? and am I right in thinking it's not locked to vodafone?

According to the specs it's a pentaband phone and will therefore work on Telecom.

The number of apps is truly multiplying, and the N9 has a lot of support from the big name developers and publishers. You'll also find that the functionality of most people's core apps (eg social networks, hotspot, etc) is already built in.

Yes while I agree that there will be plenty of games and apps available, companies such as ASB, Air NZ etc are unlikely going to develop a Meego version of their apps, if you know what I mean.

It's a great phone and I would love to own it... it's just the lack of local apps as well as apps in general that concerns me.

Yep, totally understand -- we're working on that too, so keep an eye out.

nikrolls: Very, very soon. Sorry I don't have an exact date, but you can expect it this month.

You can also subscribe to updates from the Nokia NZ page: http://www.nokia.co.nz/find-products/all-phones/nokia-n9/check-availability

To what end?  I registered some time ago & have heard nothing sincwe.
Are those registered going to get any advance advice, or simply be notified a few days after it has been publicly announced?

yeah hard out, it's been forever and still nothing. It's complete lack of information, I hope it's not stupid and we just find out with everyone else, it'd be smart to get a buzz going just before release.

I hate not knowing anything new, and not hearing of anything. I'm sick of seeing other people unboxing it, I want to be unboxing it myself! I've read so many reviews, there's nothing more I could know about the N9 except what it's like to own one.

The wait is painful

Just received:

Nokia redefines smartphone simplicity with the launch of the Nokia N9

Auckland, New Zealand – 14 October 2011. The much anticipated Nokia N9 is now available nationwide exclusively through Vodafone.

The sleek 16GB smartphone will come in black at a RRP of NZD $999.

The Nokia N9 combines great design with a new, easy-to-use interface and undoubtedly one of the best multitasking experiences of any smartphone available today.

With no home button, the Nokia N9 it is controlled entirely by touch and swipe gestures and focuses on the things people do most – use apps, socialise and multitask.

Nokia New Zealand’s managing director, Chris Carr, said, “The Nokia N9 is all about design and simplicity. We wanted to cut through the clutter associated with traditional smartphone design to deliver a distinctive product that provides consumers with a genuine alternative in the market.”

The first Nokia smartphone running on the MeeGo operating system, the Nokia N9 includes the latest audio, navigation and camera technology for a great all-round experience:

• 3.9-inch AMOLED panel with a ClearBlack display making the dark bits darker and the colours much more vivid
• 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor, wide-angle lens, HD-quality video capture and large lens aperture enable great camera performance even in low light conditions
• A curved glass screen built using an advanced polycarbonate material for superior antenna performance. Reception and voice quality is also improved with fewer dropped calls
• Watch videos in true 16:9 widescreen format and enjoy surround sound experience with any type of headphone – the Nokia N9 comes with Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology
• The latest Near Field Communication (NFC) wireless technology allows you to easily share images between devices. Pair it with accessories like the new NFC-enabled Nokia Play 360° wireless music speaker to get a great surround sound music experience with just a tap
• The Nokia N9 features free turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps. With the new dedicated Drive app, you can get in your car and start navigating to your destination right away
• Access to top social networking, entertainment and gaming apps through Nokia Store

The Nokia N9 will be available in 16 GB.

Just had a quick look at Vodafones website:

The first 50 customers will receive an additional $100 off. This offer is only available for online customers. (Normally $999)

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/shop/mobileDetails.jsp?skuId=sku13810112&voucherCode=&hardwareSkuId=&menuKey=mnit1800018&selectedPlanSkuId=&selectedView=&selectedTab=includedPlan&selectedPriceTab=&ignoreCartContent=

So if you are keen you can get it for $899 if you purchase online before 50 others.
