I've just read the thread and didn't see any mention of the Klipsch x10s. They are currently available on a cyber Monday deal for US$85:

http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Image-X10-Noise-Isolating-Earphone/dp/B000WAHFBK/ref=br_lf_m_1000856061_1_1_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=1419204622&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000856061&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1RSR53STDXWVEWVHF0XJ

Can anyone suggest a better IEM for less than US$100?

I really highly rate the Klipsch, I have the S4i which I think are good, but not as good as my monster copper pros

On further investigation the Shure SE215-Ks are also on special - US$100

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE215-K-Sound-Monitor-Black/dp/B004PNZFZ8/ref=sr_1_9?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1353964636&sr=1-9

Now I"m not sure which to get - any advice? Might just have to order both...

I'll be using them for Live sound monitors, so the shure certainly can claim pedigree in that market, but that's no guarantee they are better.

Got my hands on Logitech UE 9000!! Active noise cancellation with Bluetooth connectivity, and Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad :-)

Super big thanks to MightyApe and their supplier for super speedy delivery of this baby to my hands, the day before I'm embarking on an oversea trip away tomorrow! SWEET!

I have a few sets of low budget headphones at home, panasonic el cheapo, then some relatively cheap panasonic noise canceling ones that are Ok.

I listened to a friends Dr Dre head phones a couple of days ago, and they put my $10,000 all Alpine car audio set up to shame with their clarity, I loved them. I think I will have to search out a pair when I am on holiday next year.

Beats by Dr Dre aren't near as clear as some other headphones, plus they're not well made - they tend to fail after a couple of years. They're also pretty expensive. The noise cancelling works great in airplanes, but otherwise isn't really that useful.

Be aware, many of the failed Beats you'll come across will be copies...
And having been overseas to the US and Asia recently, I'm yet to see genuine Beats (genuine being the key word here) at much less than NZ prices... especially when you can get a deal on them.

I have had Beats.

Two pairs of their IEM's failed.

I now own SOL Republic cans.

They're similarly "fashion forward", but have a couple of options in terms of sound signatures - still bass-heavy, but the Tracks, Tracks HD and Tracks Ultra all have a specific sound signature to their model.

Tracks - I have a pair of these that I recently won from SOL Republic - good, bassy, clear, comfortable, iPod/iPhone ready with mic/remote.

Tracks HD - I have these also - used these before i got the new Tracks - again, good bass, but a little lighter in the "oomph" department. Clearer and crisper highs and mids, but again - good for anything like electronica, rock, metal, hiphop etc.

Tracks Ultra have a flatter sound - still not reference quality, but the ones I listened to were a lot flatter and crisper that the other two - also had great separation. Not ideal for my tastes but good for the more "audiophile-esque" listener who wants a stylish on-ear headphone.

I should also mention that they are pretty sturdy and have a replaceable headband.

And they're not overly expensive, with the range varying from $169 to around $350 (ish)

I actually prefer the sound of the UE 600vi to the S4i.

Just a personal thing, but I find the UE has more clarity.

Yup well I'll have the ODAC and O2 Amp by the 18th December and I intend to start by Bottle Head project before xmas now.  We should arrange another meetup, I'd like to spend a long amount of time comparing some of the amps and phones.

Sounds good, I'll have my new acquisitions by then too.

I see you are increasingly discovering the reason for the bracketed comment in the thread title :)

FWIW - My usual setup is:

Portable: Galaxy Note 2 + SoundMagic MP21 IEMs or Sennheiser PMX60's

Home: PC-source via Topping TP32 USB DAC + Sennheiser HD280 Pro's.

Used to have some Grado Alessandro's but found them too uncomfortable, nice 'phones though.
