@Kopkiwi: I've heard good reports about the LG drives for ripping... I'm hoping to pick one up in the next couple of weeks. I doubt there's much in it though, so probably just pick a decent drive and it'll be fine.

In what context? Ripping is generally getting the data off the disks to hdd, burning is writing to the disks. I think most PC blu-ray drives can burn DVDs but you'll pay a bit extra for ones that can write blu-ray.

LG drive has slightly quicker access time but slower read speed.

Asus has slightly slower access time but faster read speed.

I went with the faster read speed....

The drives I listed at the start of the post are all you need. I.e They read blu ray, but not write blu ray. they can write DVD's though...

If you go external, depending on the drive you will get slower reads... --> http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=404286

Very easy. If you have a cd drive already, just remember what plugs go where, and you should be right. This is assuming you have a sara cd drive(thin cable rather than a inch or so wide cable) happy to help work things out if you need a hand....
