The VT60 is not afflicted with the same problem. Its actually less laggy than last year's models (the GT60 too, but we aren't getting those).
The reason for the lag is probably due to the lesser processor (SoC) on the ST60 and the way the smart functions are handled this year.

As is the case this year, the ST50 models didn't share the same dual-core processor that was in the GT and VT.
When using the smart features (internet services like youtube etc), all models had to load the service up before they had access to the various functions. This brief loading took longer on the ST50. When the smart features are not used, they aren't a burden on the processor's resources.

This year, Panasonic seems to have made the smart functionality (My Smart Home) as an always on tap service so that when you decide to hit the Home button, you'll get access immediately without loading.
The 'Hexacore' processor on the VT is likely coping with this burden and the ST's MediaTek SoC is not.
The other thing to support this theory is that the S60 model has the same (or lesser) processor as the ST60 but it doesn't feature My Smart Home. It doesn't suffer the same lag problems...

So if you like your gaming more than you care about having Facebook or Youtube on your TV, then the ST60 is a bit of a letdown.

which one to use? depends on who you can negotiate the lower price from ;)

(or if you don't like negotiating, wait till a 'long weekend' and then they all have sales)

Neither company features the ST range on their websites.

lxsw20: While Philips make some pretty good stuff, their TV's didn't seem to be included. We have 2 CRT match lines which died of the same problem, stopped accepting input from remote or buttons on the TV. I was lead to believe from a few retailers their LCD's / plasmas had a higher return rate than other brands also.

Just wondering how old were your matchline tv's when they started playing up? I had the first released matchline series tv & it didn't die until about 3 years ago. Making it 20 years old I don't see too many tv's lasting that long these days in fact my less than 3 year old LG plasma is already showing signs it could be on the way out (tiny chance it's actually my htpc's graphics card but this is less than 6 months old so I'd hope not).

I was Philips only for tv's and dvd players until I had to change due to them leaving the market in NZ and probably would still be today had they not left the market.

Going on this logic...
If you were to not connect a ST60 to a LAN, the smart functionality would not be on tap, and lag time would reduce?

Unfortunately not. The My Smart Home hub is always running. I believe that when you first set the TV up, its default behaviour is to always run the hub. You have to actually configure it to run full screen as your preferred startup behaviour (kind of like how in previous years the Vierra banner was always on until you disable it).
