Try setting the console's audio manually. Leave everything but Dolby disabled.

leo0787sx: I have got 5.1 working on sky by changing the setting on sky to Dolby. However still only 2.1 on the PS3 and PS4. Tempted to go buy optical but then it means spending $100 and I'll have to use a switch :( Wish I could use HDMI :(

Sorry what?
$100 for an optical cable?

Few thoughts.

On my Sony blu Ray turning off the BD audiomix needed to output HD audio.

If you play a 5.1 source on ps3 and ask it to display, is the ps3 trying to output 5.1

Which version ps3.

A.

Did you get this sorted?

I'm looking at buying a Sony BDV-E2100 to replace an old Panasonic home theatre system and of course I want to make sure that I get proper sound from the TV and MagicTV 3600 Freeview box.

My understanding is that my TV (a Sony KDL-40CX520) has HDMI ARC (at least the manual says it does).  So the home theatre and MagicTV boxes will connect to the TV via HDMI cables, and so long as I have the home theatre HDMI plugged into the ARC HDMI on the TV then sound from the MagicTV will come out through the home theatre.  Right?

Will the MagicTV sound be in 5.1 or just 2.1?  Does this depend on the TV (i.e. if it outputs 5.1 or 2.1 audio over the HDMI ARC port)?

My TV, the home theatre box, and the MagicTV all have optical audio ports.  Would I get better audio results using these?  I assume I could have either the TV or the MagicTV connected to the home theatre via optical audio, but not both.

Dang!  One day after I find the Sony BDV-E2100 for $299 at The Warehouse they put the price back up to $399 before I have a chance to buy it.  Not such a great deal now...

Don't worry go to the Sony store, they have it for $299, where I got mine from.

Also I've managed to improve things a little, I now have 5.1 from Sky through HDMI, however the PS3 and PS4 don't seem to be 5.1 but I believe it is the settings on the consoles themselves. I haven't tried Optical as HDMI in theory offers better quality and more sound options.

Thanks for the tip about the Sony store, unfortunately I cashed in some of my credit card reward points to get $300 worth of Warehouse vouchers, which is why I didn't buy it in time (I'm still waiting for them to send me the vouchers).  I'm a bit annoyed because I'm sure their website didn't say the price was for a limited time, usually they're good at specifying the promotional dates.

Anyone want to buy $300 worth of Warehouse vouchers?!? undecided

Why not go and ask them to match Sony's price?

Hmm, I thought the price matching was just for Warehouse Stationery, but you're right it does appear to be for the normal Warehouse too!

Unfortunately Sony's online pricing shows it as $399.  I've just rung the Sony Store in Sylvia Park and that $299 price is just for their store and ends this Sunday. So I'd have to drive from the North Shore over to Sylvia Park and take a photo of the price to use as proof for the Warehouse.  I guess I could do that if the Warehouse vouchers arrive in time.

Thanks for the suggestion!

An update on my story:

The Warehouse vouchers arrived in the mail this morning so I thought it worthwhile to pop into my local Warehouse and ask them if they would match the Sony Store price without me providing any printed proof of the price.

So off I went and found the usual guy at his post where all the electronics and CD's / DVD's / games / etc are, and he was talking to another guy who I assume was a manager.  I asked if they had a price matching guarantee and they confirmed they did.  I told them that they were selling the Sony unit that I wanted for $299 last week but had put it back up to $399 this week and that the Sony Store were still selling it for $299 until Sunday, could they just ring the Sony Store to confirm the pricing?  No said the regular guy, they wanted printed proof, i.e. an advertisement.  I said I didn't think that the Sony Store had any printed advertising but I could go and photograph the price on my mobile, would that do?  No said the regular guy, it had to be printed.  I said I guess I could print it from my phone if they really insisted and at that point the manager guy stepped in and asked the regular guy if they did indeed have it on sale last week.  The regular guy confirmed that they did and the manager guy said fine, sell it to him at that price, no proof required.

So thank you manager guy at the Glenfield branch of The Warehouse!  Great to see some common sense prevailing.

Now I'll probably spend the weekend getting it all set up...

Glad you got it sorted :)

Perhaps we can share setup and see if we can get the best out of the system :)
