I use mine with a Harmony 650 remote and it works fine. Just make sure when you set it up you search for Mibox 3 4k. I had it using just Mibox, and it wouldn't wake up with button presses over IR. All good now that it is set up as the mibox 4k.
Also, I believe there was an issue with the usb Ethernet adapter not maintaining Ethernet connection while the box sleeps. I can't remember where I read that, but if it is an issue I use this one, (unitek y-3074a) and it maintains the connection when the box sleeps.

I use an after-market USB-ethernet adapter and no issues.  Haven't tried 4K (limited data plan) but certainly no-issues with 1080.

My only complaint is the Cast ?Receiver API? in the unit seems to be out of date and I can't find an option to update it. It doesn't seem to be addressed by the OTA updates.

It's in the Play Store - Google Cast Receiver: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.mediashell&hl=en

Can you not update from there?

Google were also looking for betas testers to work with a new version of GCR as there have been lots of complaints about the reliability of the version baked into Android TV: https://www.howtogeek.com/320013/how-to-get-better-casting-on-android-tv-with-googles-cast-receiver-beta/

I have that installed, but perhaps it can be updated via the app store on the device.

In Android TV settings have a look at what version number it says you are running for GCR and post back and I will compare it to mine when I get home tonight.

What audio formats does the Mibox support via HDMI?

Standard Dolby Digital is a given but what about DD+, TrueHD, Atmos, DTS, DTS-HD MA, DTS-X?

And will it bitstream the hi res formats?

Version number for Google Cast Receiver is 1.26.93139

And GCR doesn'tr appear as an option in play store via the MiBox play store app.

also can a harmony remote be fully configured to operate this as well as run the hot keys for Kodi Live TV?

You can program the basic remote control buttons but in my experience if you want to fully configure all the possible Kodi buttons (guide etc) you will need a FLIRC IR receiver https://www.flirc.tv/

Nope re HD audio formats ie. DTS:X, Atmos.

If you want that you will need to go up to a Shield.

You are up to date - mine is the same.

I have noticed before that the version number does change so it must up date if you have auto updated enabled.

So been reading about this and deciding between mibox, x96, and shield? Shield is obviously pricier so i've narrowed it down to the other 2...

Any recommendations one way or the other fellas? Also, whats the best/most reliable method of ordering mibox if that's the way i go?

appreciate in advance.

x96 a big no no, its not Android TV.  it doesnt have the leanback/remote launcher.  too many apps will expect a touch interface and make you use the remote to emulate a mouse.

theres a big big big difference between android TV and android.
