No Freeview Plus on that Sony.  Damn as that was going to be a selling point.

I know hdhomerun connects to your router but how does it hook into tv channels?

think it connects via upnp, my tv just picked it up and added all the channels to the guide (after I installed the hdhomerun app).  it also picked up and installed haystack.tv a couple of weeks ago, so before hdhomerun, i had some streaming channels in my guide.  really like this feature.

Their $1298 Samsung 55" is _amazing_... I didn't get one because I have a very nice Plasma still... BUT I MIGHT GO BACK TODAY AND GRAB ONE.

A friend got one yesterday and for $1298 it has surpassed all expectations. It's just an older Series 6, with 1st gen HDR, but the built in apps are great. Lightbox is flawless and the upscaling genuinely makes it look better than 1080P, Netflix supports 4k and (on Spark VDSL) ramps up to 4K in a couple of seconds. The youtube app has no issue with 4k - super smmooth and no judders.

My friend upgraded from a Panasonic 55" Plasma (VT60 I think) and the blacks on this new entry level 4K set are decent. Not as good as the plasma obviously - but way better than expected)

The only slight issue has been working around a non 4K capable amp, so using ARC to shunt audio all over the place. So far haven't been unable to get Kodi on a NUC to play proper multichannel sound since it appears that the TV is forcing windows to only offer 2 channel sound. Have tried many things including custom drivers and hacking EDID etc, plus forcing DTS passthrough etc. So far nothing works. Wouldn't be a problem if you had a new amp, and isn't a problem for the built in apps... But the NUC at 4k/30 can't send good sound at the moment.

Unreservedly recommended.

Cheers - N

'Upgrading' to an entry level 4K set from a 55" VT60??

Does the VT still work? Does he want to sell it?

I'm sure she's open to selling the VT60... She upgraded because the VT60 has minor image persistence issues (can continue to see small ghosts of the netflix logo and UI etc)... There is a dotcrawl type fixer in the software but she hasn't really given that a good chance. In all honesty I'm probably going to borrow the set for a while first to see how bad it really is. When I've watched stuff there I have seen the persistence when pointed out to me on a light test screen, but I've never noticed it while watching anything - even when looking for it.

I have a 50" VT20 which is still incredible and I love it, so I can't imagine that the VT60 is really worse.

What sort of money do you think a VT60 is worth (assuming the persistence goes away after running the software fix)?

Cheers - N

About $400... maximum.

Dick Smith had new box units cleared for $869 when they closed down.

But they were the 65" versions.

Heh - I am sure you understand as well as anyone that $869 new for a 65" VT60 plasma was a ridiculously cheap price - I never saw that - if I did I would have bought a couple. If it's only worth $400ish then I'll buy it and put it on the wall of my garage.

I have it at my place now and plugged it in running the app to clean up the screen... It's the Netflix play button and the "Next episode Sxx Exx" that's visible. It's really only visible in very light scenes in the bottom left corner of the screen and even then, only some, and only when there's slow panning. I expect to be able to get rid of them pretty quickly...

If I didn't have to buy a new amp for 4K I'd have bought one of the Samsings as well (Also FYI my friend managed to get her system working properly with Kodi being able to play digital audio through the TV and then out via ARC to the amp... The only thing not working now is pure windows multi-channel audio but who would use that (apart from gamers)

Cheers - N

Jaxson:

I'm fully wall mounted, so no issues there.

Sony has won I feel.

Although no freeview Plus?

The Sony X7000D does have FreeviewPLUS, does it not? From their website: https://store.sony.co.nz/KD55X7000D.html

Yes it does. It's not on the official Freeview products list page, and wasn't mentioned in a few web locations, but it does have it.

We picked up the Sony yesterday but it's being ordered in as they didn't have any left in store.
