Ok, Slingbox on it's way courtesy of eBay... I decided to get the 500.

I now need to get myself an HDCP stripper or perhaps an HDMI-Component Video converter that will also strip the HDCP.

Slingbox have a nice unit suggested on their web page:

http://www.gang-hu.com/gh_shop/index.aspx

But does not ship to NZ.

Does anyone have a link for a good, suitable HDMI HDCP stripper or Component converter that is in NZ or ships to NZ?

Thanks

Johno please  keep us posted.

I would use the 500 for a while and just see what effect it has on the signal. Just 'suck it and see' for a bit and then make an informed decision on it.

Also try the Slingbox Answers Forum, there are Kiwis there who may be able to offer further hands on advice.

But good work - it will do what you want and give you programme on your mobile devices anywhere in the world..

Will do, thanks Maxcat.

My expectation is that MySkyHDi will output HDCP and that the 500 will gag on it. We'll see!

Off to the Slingbox forum now. Not getting much work done this morning!

Most cheap HDMI splitters will remove HDCP because it is more work for them to put it back on the outputs after splitting.

Seem to have more luck with the 4 way ones compared to just 2 way ones.

Heh. Given that, it must have been a forlorn hope from the industry that HDCP would do any better than earlier attempts at copy protection!

Every device I have bought from Aliexpress that passes HDMI through also strips HDCP. This includes splitters, an audio extractor and a downconverter.

I got 4 small 2 way ones to split things into a pair of 4 to 2 matrix switches, and they appear to just pass it thru and rely on both displays negotiating with the source, so turning one on or off makes the other blank out while it sorts itself out. Really annoying as the size of them was perfect to fit behind the matrixes on a shelf.

There are many old TVs in NZ that do not do HDCP, including mine.  So when Sky wanted to upgrade my decoder, I asked them about their HDCP support.  They told me that if the device it is attached to does not do HDCP, the Sky box will still be happy and will simply turn off HDCP.

Ok, first go at setting up the Slingbox500 with hdmi ... and it is having a whinge about HDCP. Interestingly when I select HDMI input it does try to talk me out of it, and then explicitly says "turning off copy protection". The end result is blank screen - it doesn't let the hdmi pass through from input to main tv output unmolested. When it is idle, the output on the main tv is fine.

At this stage looks like I need to either strip the hdmi or convert the mySkyHDI output to HD component.

Have you tried the straight component feed from the Sky output?

Also what happens on a Freeview feed - HDMI connection - just want to see what it is doing on something other than my Tivo?

It's not in front of me but... I can't remember if it has component output? Will double check when I get home...

Does anyone have a list of links to manuals for the various mySky HDi decoders?

mySky HDi has component out via SCART or the HD component out (certainly not HD though even on most HD channels, i.e., 576i).

What do mean mean when you say various?, mySky HDi and + variant are the same box.

I used component output a few years back on whatever the MySky decoder was back in 2013.

Has component been removed on more recent Sky decoding devices?

Sounds like the tds850nnz decoder does have component output BUT (there's always a but!) depending on the channel it is only SD (Sport in 1080i but most others SD).
