Asking on behalf..

Best portable projector? Price not an issue apparently but I would like to give options under 1k and under 2k
It's for a teenager using a MacBook, mostly for watching movies.

Depends on what you call "portable"

I have a Qumi Q2 instead of a bedroom TV. I have is shooting at the ceiling so I can lie flat on my back and watch the image. I'm quite happy with it, but the room does have to be very dark for the image to be OK, fan noise is a little intrusive (projector is right next to my head), and it has a plastic lense, so focus changes as I warms (I just leave the focus set to suit a warm lense.

At your price range you could look at their current flagship "Pocket and Personal" projector, the Full HD native Qumi Q8 (USD 799 on amazon, don't know NZ pricing).

Sony has a lazer projector in the pocket size which sounds quite cool, but is not well reviewed.

In this pocket space, very few projectors are native Full HD.

If you are willing to step up in size to say backpack size, there are a lot more options to consider...

Have a look at the Sony MP-CL1A - it is showing at $799 on Sony's website however I think you'll be able to find it cheaper (maybe Amazon). It is the one I am personally considering.

Thanks, that looks like a reasonable locally available option.

It's for a birthday present so they will probably buy new, but how much would you be after?

It is practically brand new and has warranty left, looking at $700. RRP $899

I've got one of these but branded as a Microvision. http://uniden.co.nz/NEW_ZEALAND/p_ulp1000_index.asp

The image is always in focus. It's brilliant for it's size, it's smaller than most smart phones.

You do need a darkened room to get decent contrast.

Edit: Look like the Sony in Mr Murphy's post is a later version of mine. Mine doesn't have a built in speaker nor WiFi nor Bluetooth. I think these would be very handy and worth the extra dollars.
