Do the TVNZ, choice, etc on demand apps have adverts ?
xyf:
ok so turns out its pretty solid to just add the m3u to emby, with xml for epg source. Just adding the other channels that are not in there (prime/choice/hgtv) from the dvbt source via nextpvr
Wondering if you could expand on the 'from the dvbt source' bit pleasey ? thats not for adding m3u prime/choice/hgtv, or is it ?

davidcole:
It does have DVR functions. I've found it a little immature regarding it's EPG as this is sourced from Gracenote - and tend to have a few holes - see below in your question about the EPG.
davidcole:
For using Plex as the DVR, it uses an online service called gracenote - they came from music identification. As yet I find their EPG quite full of holes. Missing programs and the like. It can also take a feed from a extracted EPG - as in there's a program you can run called the EPGCollector which will connect to the hdhomerun and extract the MHEG5 EPG feed in the broadcast stream. But with plex, this tend to misidentify a lot of shows as movies (means you can;t series link them).
Unfortunately I think you're in the wrong country to use Plex DVR exclusively.
davidcole:
Hard to quantify this. There's a difference between a media client - which you were first talking about, and now a plex media server.
davidcole:
But you might be better served with Kodi (which I believe there is a native Silicondust written hdhomerun add on for running the tuners). Unsure if it will perform recording duties though.
Loryda, don't know if it helps much, but as far as I know, Emby has a TV guide Grid, Plex doesn't (yet).
At the moment Emby is trying to move from having a separate plug-in in Emby to interface with NextPVR app to it being built in to Emby. Am trying it out now. You need to add an xml file (or alternative source) to Emby to have a guide. Also, there isn't any artwork at the moment for TV episodes or anything whereas there was with the plug-in. Hopefully that will improve. Maybe you can add an xml guide in Plex, no idea, davidcole would probably know.
Would be nice if SchedulesDirect had a NZ service for a guide, but they do't.

Yeah sorry no ip source for those other channels. What i have just setup is using the IP channel sources for the ones available then using the nextpvr to just handle the other ones in the system. Problem with Emby is take forever to tune to a dvb station and it was rightly pissing my wife off when she did want to use it. Using Emby built in IPTV tuner its near instant. I noticed there is a choicetv ondemand page, just need some live streaming.
Plex not having an old school guide was the main reason i didnt go with that solution fyi. Wife was like no way. Went with emby becuase it had both.
@rb99 What do you mean Emby is moving to it being built in... Do you you mean they are simply going to add dvb tuners to the system natively? Ive thought about getting an hdhomerun but we just dont use livetv enough anymore to justify it. Sure it would be a nice to have but i already have 2 tuners in the server that i can use.
One thing im just assuming is with the IPTV it will just happily record all streams at the same time if you wanted too since they are just streams (bandwidth depending... 100mbit so should be fine)

Yep, In Emby, I still have all the DVB-S channels, just added m3u stuff as well, didn't do any actual replacing. True about the channel switching too, but so far we still mostly use the set top box for that, for now its easier than having the TV signal go from Dish to Set top box (which needs to be on I think to power the LNB), plus separate co-ax from a splitter to the main PC / PCI-E card / NextPVR / Emby and then ethernet back to the TV.
Also, the built in thing is in this Emby thread -
https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/50144-32282-new-next-pvr-option/#entry479018
You still need NextPVR. Instead of having Emby talk to Emby NextPVR plug-in talk to NextPVR (or Emby talk to Emby MediaPortal plug-in talk to Mediaportal), its Emby talk to NextPVR direct. As you'll see, they hope it'll work better and be easier to fix, but it a only a day or two old and it definitely 'in progress'. Hopefully, as mentioned, it'll direct stream and have artwork back, which it used to get from NextPVR.

Presume so to. Just haven't found anything worth recording yet...

I was thinking of doing that, do you have recording going and everything? series recording? epg too? Since we have 100mbit fibre we can run basically everything streamed no problem.
Yip you import the m3u and xml files into Nextpvr and "it just works".

Yeah ive put it straight into emby and its even better, near instant tuning

A proper EPG is the number 1 must for the wife to use any system, i had really hoped the days of EPG scrapers, xml files, scripts on schedules etc was over as ultimately thats what killed cutting the cord last time i played around with it. Could get it going, but keeping it going required way too much work, and the initial set-up was a nightmare.
I would IPTV as much as i could, but realistically as we dont have fiber yet most of our programming still comes, and will come off the airwaves.
Help me understand how i could get this to work with Emby, assuming its the same as the others really..?
HomeRun Connect on the network, NextPVR running on Server, NextPVR provides LiveTV and DVR functions to Emby Server via NextPVR Emby App. Guide data provided by NextPVR?? Or is this via an EPC Collector & scheduled script to create a XML file for Emby to use?
Cheers!
Alex.
Can't remember if you said anywhere, but I assume you're on DVB-T ? I presume so other wise Homeruns won't work. If that's fine then you just need a homerun, I think any recent network homerun works fine, though as I'm on DVB-S I don't know much about their model line up.
You won't need NextPVR at all to use with Emby as Emby'll talk directly to it. Not so sure about a guide. Most people with Emby and a Homerun use SchedulesDirect, which isn't available in NZ. It might just get the Guide off OTA, otherwise you can, as far as I know, add an xml guide like that found if you google 'xml nz au guide' (sorry can't attach the link) which that guy keeps up to date and you map the channels to the guide.
Again for all the Emby features you need to pay. Would be best to try it for a month $5US I think to see if its acceptable.
As you might have seen here, channel swapping can be really slow (about 11 sec for me), but I believe with a Homerun its way quicker.

You can check now if you are in coverage from the freeview site somewhere.
All of what you said is kind of correct but yes no need for nextpvr. Currently my nextpvr does get the guide through the dvbt transmission, works great. Emby isnt great for livetv if its your main focus, its only our 3rd focus really as i wanted to move away from it this year and over to ondemand apps as much as possible. I went android tv for the front end because i love the concept of chromecast and wanted to use it more, tvnz and three now support chromecasting so its easy as to setup. Also i was just sick of dealing with a keyboard and htpc all the time. Now my server sits there watching some torrent sites for the shows we like and if its not on there it will record or we use ondemand or netflix.
Only other thing to remember is make sure you home network is good, i also just AC'd our wifi but if possible always wire your main boxes in.
So im going to go with Plex for the time being, will run NextPVR over the top and scrape the EPG data. If i have to, i can always change down the road to Emby or Kodi or whatever..
Finalized the shopping list (below). Any suggestions or recomendations on hardware or places to buy?
Thanks again for all the help team, really appreciated!
Cheers,
Alex
